Technical Standards for Small Busbars

Small busbars must meet IEC 61439 standards for current rating, thermal performance, short-circuit withstand, material selection, and installation to ensure safe and reliable low-voltage power distribution.

Design Standards and Compliance

Small busbars are typically part of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies and must comply with IEC 61439, which defines design verification, test requirements, and thermal performance for busbar assemblies up to 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC. Compliance ensures safety, reliability, and proper integration into electrical panels.

Material Selection

Copper and aluminum are the most common materials.

ET

P copper (C11000) is widely used for small busbars due to its high conductivity, mechanical strength, and ease of fabrication. Oxygen-free copper (C10200) or silver-bearing copper may be used for high-purity or high-temperature applications. Aluminum is lighter and cost-effective but has lower conductivity and higher thermal expansion.

Current Rating and Thermal Performance

Busbars must be sized to carry the continuous rated current (Ir) without exceeding permissible temperature rise.

The IE

C 61439 standard specifies allowable temperature rise limits for copper and aluminum under continuous load. Small busbars should also consider diversity factors to account for non-simultaneous loads, reducing the required main busbar current compared to the sum of individual circuit currents.

Short-

Circuit Withstand

Busbars must withstand short-circuit currents without mechanical or thermal failure.

IE

C 60865-1 and IEC 61439 define short-circuit effects and testing procedures. Proper sizing ensures that small busbars can handle fault currents safely.

Installation Considerations

Spacing and orientation: Maintain adequate clearance to prevent overheating and allow air circulation. Surface finish and grouping: Derate busbar ratings for grouped bars or enclosures with limited ventilation. Mounting systems: Use standardized adapters, clamps, or top-hat rails to secure busbars and maintain alignment.

Connections: Bolted or clamped joints must ensure low resistance and mechanical stability.

Practical Guidelines

Avoid undersizing to prevent voltage drops, overheating, and insulation failure. Avoid oversizing to reduce unnecessary cost and space usage. Use ampacity tables and manufacturer data as a first pass, then adjust for enclosure conditions, ambient temperature, and load distribution.

Consider scalability and flexibility for future expansion, especially in modular control panels. By following these technical requirements, small busbars can safely and efficiently distribute power in low-voltage systems while meeting international standards and operational reliability.
