Techniques for Laying Fiber Optic Cables in Factories

Fiber optic cables can be efficiently installed between factory buildings using proper planning, protective conduits, and either blowing or pulling techniques to ensure high-speed, reliable connectivity.

Planning and Design

Before installation, survey the site to determine the optimal cable routes between buildings, considering existing infrastructure, obstacles, and distance. Identify a central cross-connection room in one building to serve as the main node, which can connect multiple adjacent buildings, reducing the need for intermediate switches or connection rooms. Decide whether the installation will be underground, aerial, or a combination, and ensure compliance with local regulations and safety codes.

Cable Selection and Protection

For inter-building connections, use armoured outdoor-rated fiber optic cables to withstand environmental stress, UV exposure, and potential physical damage. Ensure the cable type supports the required bandwidth and distance. Protect the fiber by installing it in conduits, microducts, or trays, maintaining the minimum bend radius to prevent signal loss or fiber breakage.

Installation Methods

Two common methods are used: Blowing Installation: Fiber is inserted into a duct and compressed air is used to blow the cable through the conduit. This method minimizes handling damage and allows for long, continuous runs without splicing. Pulling Installation: Fiber is pulled through the conduit using a rope or cable puller.

Care must be taken to avoid exceeding the cable's maximum pulling tension and bend radius.

Termination and Testing

Once the fiber reaches the destination building, terminate it in a fiber distribution frame or closure. Use pre-terminated cables where possible to reduce splicing and installation time. After termination, perform testing with OTDR, power meters, and insertion loss measurements to ensure signal integrity and compliance with network standards.

Grounding and Safety

If using armoured fiber, ensure the metallic sheath is properly bonded and grounded according to local electrical codes to prevent electrical faults and interference. Maintain a clean environment at connection points, using fiber cleaning tools to avoid dust or oil contamination, which can degrade performance.

Cost and Efficiency Considerations

Fiber networks allow long-distance connections without intermediate switches, reducing infrastructure costs compared to copper networks. Using air-blown or pre-terminated fiber can further reduce labor and installation time while maintaining high reliability. By following these best practices, you can establish a robust, high-capacity fiber optic network between factory buildings that supports current and future data demands.
