No internet access even when fiber optic cable goes into main router

Internet may fail when a fiber optic cable is connected due to physical cable issues, router configuration errors, or ISP-related setup problems.

Check Physical Connections

Ensure the fiber optic cable is properly connected to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and the router's WAN port. Inspect the cable for bends, cuts, or dust on connectors, as even minor damage can cause signal loss or attenuation, preventing internet access. Clean connectors with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol if necessary, and make sure all connections are secure.

Verify Router Configuration

If your ISP provides a static IP, confirm that the router is set to Static IP mode with the correct IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS. Some routers may default to dynamic IP during auto-detection, which can fail if the ISP requires static settings. Ensure the router firmware is up to date, as outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with fiber connections.

Check that the router's WAN port is functioning and that the Ethernet cable connecting the ONT to the router is in good condition.

Restart Devices

Power cycle the ONT, router, and any switches. Unplug them for 10–30 seconds, then plug them back in. Wait a few minutes for the devices to fully reboot, as temporary glitches can prevent the router from obtaining an IP address.

Check Indicator Lights

A blinking or red light on the router or ONT often indicates a failure to obtain an IP address or a loss of signal.

A LO

S (Loss of Signal) LED on the transceiver or ONT signals connectivity issues, which may require inspection of the fiber cable or replacement of the transceiver. ISP-Related IssuesIf the above steps do not resolve the problem: Confirm with your ISP that the fiber service is activated and provisioned for your account.

Some IS

Ps require the ONT to be registered with their network before a router can obtain an IP address. If using a new fiber modem or ONT, the ISP may need to update MAC address registration or provide specific configuration details.

Additional Tips

Avoid sharp bends or kinks in the fiber cable.

Ensure the ON

T and router are adequately ventilated to prevent overheating. If possible, connect a computer directly to the ONT to verify whether the issue is with the router or the fiber service itself. By systematically checking physical connections, router settings, and ISP provisioning, most fiber internet connectivity issues can be resolved.

If problems persist, contacting your ISP for further diagnostics is recommended.
