Fiber optic cable to splitter

A fiber optic cable enters a splitter through an input port, where the light signal is guided and divided into multiple output fibers according to the splitter's design and split ratio.

Signal Entry and Connection

The process begins with the incoming fiber optic cable carrying light pulses from the network provider. This cable is connected to the input port of the splitter, often via a standard fiber connector or fusion splicing for permanent installations. The fiber's core, which carries the light, aligns precisely with the splitter's internal waveguide or fused fiber structure to ensure minimal signal loss.

Internal Signal Distribution

Inside the splitter, the light encounters a network of waveguides or fused fibers, depending on the splitter type: Fused Biconical Taper (FBT) Splitters: Two or more fibers are stripped of their coating, fused together, and stretched under heat to form a tapered structure. This allows the light to be split between the fibers, with the split ratio controlled by the taper length and angle. Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Splitters: Light enters a planar waveguide fabricated on a silica substrate.

The waveguides are designed with precise refractive index variations to divide the light evenly or according to a specific ratio.

PL

C splitters are ideal for larger networks and higher splitting ratios. The splitter divides the optical power according to its split ratio (e.g., 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 32), ensuring each output fiber receives the appropriate portion of the signal.

Signal Exit and Output

After splitting, the light exits through the output ports, each connected to a separate fiber that leads to end users, devices, or further network components. The output fibers are typically terminated with connectors or spliced into the network, maintaining signal integrity and minimizing loss.

Summary

In essence, the fiber optic cable enters the splitter at the input port, the light is distributed internally via waveguides or fused fibers, and then exits through multiple output fibers. The choice between FBT and PLC splitters depends on the network scale, required split ratio, and performance needs, with PLC offering more precise and uniform splits for larger deployments.
