Cable tray construction grounding

Proper grounding of cable trays ensures safety, reduces electrical hazards, and maintains system reliability by providing a low-impedance path for fault currents.

Purpose of Cable Tray Grounding

Grounding cable trays is essential for safety and equipment protection. It provides a path for fault currents to flow safely to the earth, reducing the risk of electric shock, fire, and equipment damage due to overvoltage or insulation failure. Grounding also helps dissipate lightning strikes and minimizes electromagnetic interference (EMI), ensuring stable operation of sensitive electronic and communication systems.

Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC)The metallic cable tray itself can serve as an Equipment Grounding Conductor (EGC) in qualifying installations, as per NEC guidelines. When used as an EGC, the tray must be permanently and electrically continuous, capable of safely conducting fault currents, and bonded to protective devices to ensure proper operation under fault conditions. Alternatively, a separate EGC cable can be installed in or on the tray and bonded to each or alternate tray sections using grounding clamps, which also mechanically secure the conductor against magnetic forces during fault currents.

Bonding and Installation Practices

All metallic cable trays must be grounded, regardless of whether they are used as an EGC. Bonding connections should use tin- or zinc-plated connectors, especially when connecting insulated conductors to aluminum trays to prevent electrolytic corrosion. Bare copper conductors should not be placed in aluminum trays in moist environments; insulated conductors with exposed bonding points are preferred.

Steel trays should not be used as EGCs for circuits with ground-fault protection above 600 amperes. Tray sections should be electrically bonded to maintain continuity and minimize impedance, ensuring fault currents are safely conducted.

Grounding Wire Considerations

Grounding wires must comply with local and international electrical standards, maintaining low resistance (ideally 4 ohms or less) for effective fault current diversion. Wires should be kept clear of flammable materials and protected from moisture or corrosive environments to ensure long-term reliability.

Maintenance and Safety

Regular inspection of cable tray grounding is recommended to ensure mechanical integrity, electrical continuity, and corrosion-free connections. Properly maintained grounding systems enhance safety, reduce EMI, and ensure compliance with NEC Article 392 and other relevant standards. By following these practices, electrical professionals can ensure that cable tray installations are safe, code-compliant, and reliable over the long term.
