Fiber Optic Sensor Distance Accuracy

Fiber optic sensors can measure distance with nanometer-level accuracy, making them ideal for precision applications in manufacturing, biomedical, and structural monitoring.

High Precision and Measurement Principles

Fiber optic distance sensors achieve extremely high accuracy using interferometric techniques, such as white light interferometry, which allows absolute distance measurements with resolutions down to a few nanometers and even sub-nanometer levels in some systems (e.g., FDM-3). These sensors can detect minute changes in position, expansion, drift, or vibration of components, making them suitable for applications where tolerances are in the micrometer or nanometer range. The use of optical fibers allows the probe and evaluation unit to be separated by significant distances without loss of signal quality.

Applications

Fiber optic sensors are highly versatile and can be used in: Precision manufacturing: For component alignment, workpiece positioning, and monitoring machine tool movements. Microsystems and micro-geometry measurement: Measuring micro bores, micro gears, or other small cavities where tactile sensors are impractical. Biomedical diagnostics: Minimally invasive or endoscopic measurements of tissue morphology and spectroscopic properties.

Structural monitoring: Continuous monitoring of highly stressed components for deformation or vibration. High-speed production lines: Non-contact measurement of displacement, position, or vibration, even on fragile or moving targets.

Advantages Over Other Sensors

Compared to conventional distance sensors like laser, ultrasonic, or inductive sensors, fiber optic sensors offer: Non-contact measurement with immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Miniaturization potential, with probes as small as 50 µm in diameter, allowing measurements in tight spaces. High dynamic range and flexibility, capable of measuring over short to long distances with high resolution.

Reliable absolute measurements, even if the measurement process is interrupted, unlike some laser interferometers.
