Japan is actively developing domestic AI servers through SoftBank, Fujitsu, and Foxconn, focusing on high-performance, GPU-enabled, and sovereign computing solutions. SoftBank's AI Server PlansSoftBank Corp is collaborating with Nvidia and Foxconn to develop “Made-in-Japan” AI servers. The company plans a phased approach, starting with assembly of externally sourced components and eventually taking full control of manufacturing by the end of the decade.

These servers are designed to handle high-performance GPUs for computationally intensive AI workloads, including large language models, aligning with SoftBank's broader AI strategy and its $30 billion investment in OpenAI. Fujitsu's Sovereign AI ServersFujitsu has launched sovereign AI servers built entirely in Japan, starting production in March 2026 at its Kasashima Plant.

These servers integrate Fujitsu's MONAKA processor with Nvidia's latest Blackwell GPUs, providing high-performance compute while ensuring data sovereignty and compliance with Japan's Economic Security Promotion Act. The servers are designed for mission-critical operations, low-latency AI workloads, and secure on-premise deployment, minimizing risks from foreign cloud exposure and supply-chain tampering. Foxconn's RoleFoxconn is seeking Japanese government subsidies to manufacture AI servers at Sharp's Kameyama No.

2 plant in Mie Prefecture. Leveraging its long-standing relationship with Nvidia, Foxconn aims to secure GPU allocations for local production. The company may also consider using chips from Rapidus, Japan's state-backed chipmaker, to support domestic AI server manufacturing.

This move diversifies Foxconn's production base beyond China and strengthens Japan's local AI infrastructure.
