Configure the fiber optic port speed of the switch

Fiber optic port speed on a switch can be configured manually or via autonegotiation, depending on the SFP module and switch model, with commands specifying speed, duplex, and medium type.

Understanding Port Speed and Duplex

Fiber optic ports use SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) or SFP+ modules, which determine the supported speed (1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, 40 Gbps, etc.) and duplex mode. Most modern switches default to autonegotiation, allowing the switch and connected device to automatically select the optimal speed and full-duplex mode. However, for critical connections, manual configuration ensures consistent performance and avoids mismatches.

Full-duplex allows simultaneous transmission and reception. Half-duplex is rarely used on fiber ports and is generally unsupported at gigabit speeds.

Cisco Switch Configuration

For Cisco switches, the steps to configure fiber optic port speed are: Access the switch CLI via console or SSH. Enter configuration mode: CodeCopyenableconfigure terminal Select the interface: CodeCopyinterface Set the port speed: CodeCopyspeed (e.g., speed 1000 for 1 Gbps) Use auto to enable autosensing if supported. Configure duplex mode: CodeCopyduplex full For high-speed ports (16 Gbps), configure FEC if required: CodeCopyswitchport fecswitchport fec tts Note: FEC cannot be configured when auto speed is enabled for 2/4/8/16 Gbps ports.

Save the configuration: CodeCopycopy running-config startup-config Cisco switches also allow specifying the medium (fiber or copper) for combination ports to ensure the correct configuration is applied.

Extreme Networks Switch Configuration

On Extreme

Switching devices: 1G SFP ports are usually statically set to 1 Gbps and cannot be changed. 10G SFP+ ports should be configured to 10 Gbps full-duplex. Autonegotiation can be enabled or disabled: CodeCopyconfigure ports {medium [copper|fiber]} auto on|off speed duplex full Some SFPs, like 100FX, require manual speed configuration to 100 Mbps.

Best Practices

Verify SF

P compatibility with the switch and desired speed. Use full-duplex for fiber connections to maximize throughput. Manually configure speed for critical links to avoid autonegotiation mismatches.

Check the interface status after configuration: CodeCopyshow interface Document the configuration for network management and troubleshooting. By following these steps, you can ensure that fiber optic ports operate at the correct speed and duplex mode, providing reliable and high-performance connectivity across your network.

Configuring Switch Port Speed and Duplex Setting

You can manually configure the duplex setting and the speed of 10/100/1000 Mbps ports. The 10/100/1000 Mbps ports can connect to either 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T, or 1000BASE-T networks.

Configuring Fibre Channel Interfaces

Port speed can be configured on a physical Fibre Channel interface (but not on a virtual Fibre Channel interface). By default, the port speed for an interface is automatically calculated by the switch.

The speed command is utilized to set the operational speed of the switch port, with options including 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps. Example: Setting a port to 100 Mbps ensures compatibility
