Integrated optical fiber preform optical fiber and optical cable

Optical fiber production begins with a preform, which is drawn into fiber and then assembled into cables for high-performance light transmission.

Optical Fiber Preform

An optical fiber preform is a precisely engineered cylindrical rod made of high-purity glass, serving as the precursor for fiber drawing. Preforms are designed to control the refractive index profile, core-cladding structure, and geometric uniformity, which directly affect the fiber's optical performance, including attenuation, dispersion, and mode field diameter. Common manufacturing methods include: PCVD (Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition): Uses plasma to deposit glass layers inside a quartz tube, forming a homogeneous core rod with precise refractive index control.

VA

D (Vapor Axial Deposition): Deposits glass along the axis of the tube, suitable for high-purity core rods.

OV

D (Outside Vapor Deposition): Converts raw-material gas into glass powder, which is sintered into a transparent rod, often used for cladding or high-purity quartz. Advanced preforms, such as hollow-core or anti-resonant fibers, incorporate microstructured air holes to reduce Rayleigh scattering, lower nonlinearity, and enable ultra-low-loss transmission for high-power or long-distance applications.

Optical Fiber

The optical fiber is drawn from the preform using a controlled heating and pulling process. During drawing, the fiber's diameter, concentricity, and coating are precisely monitored to ensure uniformity and minimal signal loss. Hollow-core fibers may use pressurization techniques to maintain air-hole structures and reduce attenuation.

Fibers are typically single-mode or multi-mode, with specialized designs for high-power lasers, UV/mid-infrared transmission, or sensing applications.

Optical Cable

Once fibers are drawn, they are assembled into optical cables, which provide mechanical protection, environmental resistance, and ease of deployment. Cables may include multiple fibers, buffer tubes, strength members, and protective jackets, tailored for applications ranging from telecommunications and data centers to aerospace and medical devices. Custom cable assemblies ensure precise light delivery, durability under harsh conditions, and compatibility with system integration requirements.

Applications and Advantages

Telecommunications: High-speed, long-distance data transmission with low latency. Industrial and Medical: Laser delivery, sensing, spectroscopy, and imaging. Specialized Fibers: Hollow-core fibers enable ultra-low-loss, low-dispersion transmission, suitable for high-power lasers, nonlinear optics, and optofluidic technologies.

Quality Control and Testing

Manufacturers employ preform analyzers and fiber test systems to measure geometric and optical properties, including diameter, non-circularity, concentricity, and transmission characteristics. Advanced testing ensures compliance with international standards and optimizes yield and performance. In summary, the preform defines the fiber's optical properties, the fiber provides the medium for light transmission, and the cable ensures practical deployment and protection, forming an integrated system essential for modern optical communication and specialized photonics applications.
