There are several ways to install fireproof cable trays

Fireproof cable trays are connected using secure mechanical fittings, attachment strips, or click-lock systems, combined with proper firestopping to ensure safety and compliance.

Mechanical Connection of Cable Trays

Align and Position Trays: Ensure trays are straight, level, and properly aligned along the planned route. Use wall brackets, ceiling profiles, or threaded rods depending on mounting type (wall or ceiling) to support the trays. Use Connectors and Fittings: For standard fireproof trays, connect sections using bolts, screws, or banding systems.

For example, attach bottom sections to attachment strips with staggered screws and secure side pieces to the bottom using screws spaced approximately 8 inches apart. Systems like Fast Klick E90 allow trays to click and lock onto brackets without additional tools, simplifying installation. Attachment Strips and Banding: For enhanced fire resistance, cut attachment strips to the tray width and secure them to the top and bottom of the tray using metal banding.

Position strips approximately 24 inches apart to back up butt joints, ensuring overlap of at least 1. 5 inches. Spacing and Load Considerations: Maintain support spacing according to tray type and load, typically 1.

2–3 meters apart. Ensure the tray load does not exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight, often around 10 kg/m for lightweight fireproof trays.

Fireproofing and Sealing

Firestopping at Penetrations: When trays pass through walls, slabs, or enter electrical panels, seal openings with fire-rated materials such as firestop packs, mineral wool, or firestop mastic. Ensure gaps around cables do not exceed 1 cm² and packing thickness is at least 24 cm. Backing Plates for Large Openings: For larger penetrations, install a fire-resistant backing plate before sealing to provide structural support and maintain fire integrity.

Cover Plates and Finishing: Use square, evenly painted cover plates to close openings, ensuring a tight, crack-free seal both internally and externally.

Best Practices

Plan the Route: Avoid unnecessary bends or overlaps with other pipelines. Keep power and signal cables segregated to reduce interference. Select Appropriate Tray Material: Use galvanized steel, stainless steel, or fire-resistant composites depending on indoor/outdoor conditions and environmental factors.

Inspection: Verify that all trays are installed according to design criteria and that fireproofing measures are complete before laying cables. By following these steps, fireproof cable trays can be securely connected while maintaining fire safety, structural integrity, and compliance with electrical and building standards.
