How to locate a tripped circuit breaker in a distribution box

A tripped circuit breaker is usually misaligned with the others, often in a middle or “off” position, and may show a red or orange indicator tab.

Visual Inspection

To check if a breaker has tripped, first locate your main electrical panel, typically in a garage, basement, or utility room. Open the panel door and look at the row of switches. A breaker that is actively supplying power will be in the “On” position, usually facing upward or toward the center of the panel.

A tripped breaker often appears misaligned, slightly tilted, or in a middle/neutral position between “On” and “Off”. Some breakers also display a red or orange tab when tripped. Resetting a Tripped BreakerTurn off lights and unplug appliances on the affected circuit.

Push the breaker fully to the “Off” position to reset the internal mechanism. Wait a few seconds, then flip it firmly to the “On” position. You should hear a click, indicating the circuit is restored.

If the breaker immediately returns to the middle or “Off” position, a persistent fault exists, such as a short circuit or overload, and you should stop attempting to reset it and contact a licensed electrician.

Safety Precautions

Always ensure your hands are dry and you are standing on a dry surface before touching the panel. Wear insulated gloves and safety glasses if possible. Never touch exposed wiring inside the panel.

If you notice smoke, burning smells, or unusual buzzing, stop immediately and call a professional.

Additional Tips

If multiple outlets or appliances are off, check for a GFCI outlet that may have tripped, as it can shut off all connected receptacles. For repeated trips or breakers that won't hold, the issue may be a faulty breaker or wiring problem, requiring professional diagnosis. By following these steps, you can safely identify and reset a tripped breaker while minimizing the risk of electrical hazards.
