Fiber Optic Grating Temperature Measurement Construction

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) provide precise, robust, and multiplexed temperature measurement through optical fiber sensors, with installation methods tailored to the application environment.

Construction of FBG Temperature Sensors

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) are created by exposing the core of a single-mode optical fiber to a periodic pattern of intense UV light, forming a permanent modulation in the refractive index known as a grating. This grating reflects a specific wavelength of light, called the Bragg wavelength, which shifts in response to temperature changes due to thermal expansion and the thermo-optic effect. The Bragg wavelength shift is measured by an interrogation unit, allowing precise temperature monitoring.

FB

G temperature sensors can be classified based on: Temperature range: low, room, or high-temperature resistant. Measurement points: single-point or multi-point (series-connected or quasi-distributed arrays). Encapsulation material: seamless steel tubes, ceramics, or polymers, which protect the fiber and enhance stability.

High-temperature FB

Gs can operate up to 1000°C, while polyimide-coated fibers are suitable for industrial environments. Installation Methods1. Sensor Mounting: FBGs can be spot welded, glued, or screwed onto surfaces using epoxy or mechanical supports.

Stainless steel or polymer encapsulation ensures long-term stability and protects the fiber from mechanical stress. Temperature compensation sensors (e.g., os4100) maintain fiber tension and prevent measurement drift. 2.

Array Configuration: Multiple FBGs can be written along a single fiber, spaced at defined intervals, allowing distributed temperature monitoring over long distances (up to several kilometers). Arrays can be installed in harsh environments, including pipelines, industrial machinery, and composite materials. 3.

Integration with Interrogators: Interrogators read the reflected Bragg wavelengths and convert them into temperature data. Systems like Polytec's si155 or HYPERION platform provide real-time, high-resolution measurements with low noise and fast response. Proper fiber routing and strain relief are essential to avoid mechanical interference that could affect temperature readings.

4. Environmental Considerations: FBGs are immune to electromagnetic interference and can operate in extreme conditions. Hermetic sealing or encapsulation in stainless steel tubes is recommended for high-humidity or corrosive environments.

Practical Tips

Ensure fiber alignment and tension during installation to prevent strain-induced errors. Use polyimide or metal coatings for high-temperature or harsh industrial applications. For distributed sensing, maintain consistent spacing between gratings to avoid signal overlap.

Calibrate the system with a reference thermometer if high accuracy is required, especially for critical industrial applications.

G temperature sensors are widely used in aerospace, power systems, petrochemical industries, and structural health monitoring, offering precise, multiplexed, and robust temperature measurement solutions.
