Installation Method of Cable Tray Columns

Cable tray columns are installed by carefully planning the route, preparing materials, securing vertical supports, and aligning trays with proper spacing and safety measures.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, review the approved shop drawings to determine the layout, length, and location of the cable tray columns in the building. Inspect all materials upon delivery to ensure they meet specifications and are free from damage. Store trays horizontally on a flat surface with timber supports at intervals of about one meter, protecting them from moisture and sunlight.

Route Marking and Support Points

Mark the vertical path of the cable tray column using a chalk line or laser level. Identify and mark support points along the column, typically spaced 1. 5 to 3 meters apart, depending on the tray type and load.

Include locations for bends, tees, or elevation changes in the column layout.

Material and Tools

Required materials include cable trays, couplers (splice plates), mounting brackets, threaded rods, anchor bolts, and grounding straps. Essential tools are a power drill, hammer drill (for concrete), wrench set, measuring tape, level, hacksaw or angle grinder, and a file for deburring. Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat is mandatory.

Installing Vertical Supports

Install wall-mounted brackets, ceiling struts, or floor supports at the marked points. Ensure each support is level and securely anchored to the structural surface. For taller columns, use intermediate supports to prevent sagging and maintain alignment.

Mounting the Cable Trays

Attach the cable trays to the vertical supports using appropriate clamps or fasteners. Align trays straight and level, connecting sections with couplers or splice plates. For ladder-type trays, ensure rungs are horizontal to facilitate cable placement and ventilation.

Grounding and Bonding

Bond all trays and supports according to electrical codes to ensure safety. Use grounding straps to connect the trays to the building's grounding system, preventing electrical hazards.

Final Checks

After installation, verify that all trays are level, properly supported, and free from obstructions. Confirm that the tray fill does not exceed recommended limits (usually 50%) and that the system allows for future cable expansion. By following these steps, cable tray columns can be installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with electrical codes, ensuring a reliable and maintainable cable management system.
