How to access fiber optic cables and routers

To use fiber optic cables with a router, you need an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) to convert the fiber signal into Ethernet, which then connects to your router's WAN port.

Required Equipment

Optical Network Terminal (ONT): Converts the incoming fiber optic light signals into electrical signals your router can use, usually provided by your ISP. Fiber optic cable: Typically single-mode with SC/APC or SC/UPC connectors, supplied by your ISP. Router: Must have a WAN or Ethernet port compatible with the ONT output; fiber-ready routers can maximize speed.

Ethernet cable: Cat6a or higher is recommended to maintain high-speed performance between the ONT and router. Power cables: For both the ONT and router.

Step-by-

Step Connection

Install the ONT: Locate the fiber wall outlet where your ISP's fiber line enters your home. Connect the fiber optic cable from the wall to the ONT's optical port. Power on the ONT and wait for the status lights to stabilize, indicating a successful connection.

Connect the ON

T to the Router: Use an Ethernet cable to link the ONT's LAN/Ethernet port to your router's WAN port. Ensure the router is powered on and check that its indicator lights confirm a proper connection. Configure the Router: Access your router's settings via a computer or mobile device to configure the internet connection.

Most routers automatically detect the ONT connection, but you may need to enter credentials provided by your ISP.

Tips for Optimal Performance

Place the ONT close to the fiber entry point to minimize signal loss. Keep both the ONT and router in a dry, ventilated area with surge protection. Handle fiber connectors carefully; avoid touching the glass ends to prevent damage or signal degradation.

Use high-quality Ethernet cables to preserve the full speed potential of your fiber connection. By following these steps, your fiber optic internet will be properly routed through your home network, providing high-speed, low-latency connectivity for all devices.
