Fiber optic cable through a hole

Fiber optic cables must be installed through appropriately sized holes or conduits, maintaining minimum bend radius and using proper conduit or innerduct to prevent damage.

Hole and Conduit Sizing

When running fiber optic cable through walls or other structures, the hole diameter should exceed the cable diameter to allow easy passage and accommodate any internal lead-in kits. For example, typical FTTP fiber cables are about 8mm in diameter, so a hole of 10–12mm is recommended for smooth installation and to fit conduit if needed. For indoor conduits, ensure the internal diameter is larger than the cable, ideally 2–3mm more than the cable diameter, to prevent friction and bending stress.

For underground or outdoor installations, fiber is often placed in PVC conduit or innerduct, which may be direct-buried or installed in handholes and manholes. The conduit should provide a continuous, straight path and be sized according to the cable's outer diameter and the number of cables being installed. The diameter ratio or area ratio can help determine the optimal conduit size to avoid excessive pulling tension.

Bend Radius and Slack Management

Fiber optic cables are sensitive to bending. Always maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer during installation, especially when passing through holes or around corners. Slack should be stored in handholes or intermediate points to allow for future splicing or rerouting, ensuring coils are large enough to respect the bend radius.

Installation Techniques

Pulling or blowing: Fiber can be pulled using a cable grip and swivel connector or blown (cable jetting) through innerducts. Lubrication: Use compatible cable lubricants to reduce friction when pulling through conduits. Intermediate points: For long runs, use intermediate manholes or handholes to feed the cable in sections, reducing tension and risk of damage.

Indoor entry: Drill holes slightly above skirting boards or in accessible locations, and use conduit to protect the cable from sharp edges or mechanical stress.

Safety and Standards

For outdoor installations, trenches should be 1–1. 2 meters deep to protect the conduit, with additional backfill or concrete protection in hard rock areas. Always check local construction standards and utility maps before drilling or trenching to avoid damaging existing services.

For aerial installations, maintain proper clearances from power lines and follow utility pole attachment standards. By following these guidelines—proper hole sizing, conduit use, bend radius adherence, and careful pulling techniques—you can safely and effectively run fiber optic cable through holes in both indoor and outdoor environments.
