Wiring of the electricity meter in the distribution box

The wiring from the distribution box to the electricity meter involves connecting the main supply lines to the meter, then routing the output to the main distribution board with proper protective devices and grounding.

Overview of Components

Electricity Meter: Measures energy consumption; typically single-phase (220–240V) or three-phase depending on the supply. Main Circuit Breaker (MCB/DP): Acts as the main isolator to switch off the entire supply in emergencies. Distribution Board (Consumer Unit): Contains protective devices like MCBs, RCDs, and fuses to safely distribute electricity to sub-circuits.

Conductors: Live (phase), neutral, and earth wires connecting the meter to the distribution board and onward to sub-circuits.

Wiring Sequence

Incoming Supply to Meter: The utility feed enters the service enclosure, typically through a conduit. The line (live) and neutral conductors are connected to the meter terminals. Ensure the meter is rated for the supply voltage and current (e.g., 63A for a standard home) and is CE or UL certified if required.

Meter to Main Distribution Board: From the meter's output terminals, connect the live and neutral wires to the main double-pole MCB in the distribution board. The earth wire should be connected to the ground bus bar in the board.

Bus Bars and Sub-

Circuits: The live output from the main MCB is routed to the common bus bar, which feeds individual single-pole MCBs for lighting, sockets, and appliances. Neutral wires are connected to the neutral bus bar, and earth wires to the grounding bus. Protective Devices: Install RCDs for additional safety, especially for circuits supplying wet areas or high-risk appliances.

Each sub-circuit should have an appropriately rated MCB (e.g., 16A for lighting, 20A for sockets),. Grounding: Connect a grounding electrode conductor (GEC) from the distribution board to a copper ground rod driven into the soil. Ensure continuity and proper clamping to prevent electrical hazards.

Safety and Compliance

Always disconnect the main supply before working on wiring. Follow color coding: brown (live), blue (neutral), green/yellow (earth) for IEC standards; black/red/blue for US NEC standards. Use conductors rated for the expected load and voltage (e.g., 10AWG or 8AWG copper for 63A supply),.

Ensure all connections are tightened to manufacturer torque specifications and that the distribution board is mounted securely with easy access for maintenance.

Testing

After wiring, perform a continuity test and verify that all protective devices function correctly before requesting utility connection. Proper labeling of breakers and circuits is essential for safe operation and maintenance. By following these steps, the connection from the electricity meter to the distribution box ensures a safe, reliable, and code-compliant electrical system for residential or small commercial installations.
