Low-voltage switchgear busbar principle

Busbars in low-voltage switchgear serve as the main conductive path, distributing electrical power safely and efficiently while maintaining thermal, mechanical, and electrical integrity.

Function and Principle

A busbar is a metallic conductor, typically made of copper or aluminum, that carries electrical current within a switchgear assembly. Its primary role is to connect incoming power sources to circuit breakers and outgoing feeders, ensuring smooth and reliable power distribution across the system. The principle of busbar operation is based on providing a low-resistance, high-current path that can handle both normal operating currents and short-circuit conditions without excessive heating or mechanical deformation.

Design Considerations

Current Carrying Capacity: Busbars are sized according to the maximum expected load, considering a diversity factor to account for non-simultaneous operation of connected circuits.

IE

C 61439 specifies thermal limits, typically allowing a maximum temperature rise of 105 K above ambient, with an upper safe limit of 140°C. Material Selection: Copper is preferred for high conductivity and mechanical strength, while aluminum is lighter and cost-effective. Laminated or flat busbars improve cooling and reduce electromagnetic interference.

Mechanical Strength and Support: Busbars must withstand short-circuit forces and vibrations. Proper spacing, bracing, and insulation prevent deformation and maintain safety. Thermal Management: Heat generated by current flow is managed through busbar cross-section, spacing, and ventilation.

Flat or tubular designs enhance cooling efficiency.

Short-

Circuit Withstand: Busbars are designed to endure short-circuit currents without damage. Verification includes mechanical stress and thermal rise tests as per IEC 61439. Insulation and Safety: Busbars are insulated or segregated to prevent accidental contact and ensure compliance with protection standards.

Compartmentalization in switchgear improves maintenance safety and reduces arc-flash risk.

Types of Busbars

Rigid Busbars: Solid metal bars, strong and stable, suitable for main power distribution. Flexible Busbars: Thin copper layers or braided conductors, used for connections requiring movement or vibration tolerance. Flat Busbars: Easy to install, good cooling, commonly used in low-voltage assemblies.

Tubular Busbars: Hollow, lighter, and improve cooling in high-current systems. Laminated Busbars: Multiple thin conductors with insulation, reducing inductance and improving thermal performance. Compliance and StandardsLow-voltage switchgear busbars must comply with IEC 61439, which defines design verification, temperature rise limits, short-circuit withstand, dielectric properties, and protection against electric shock.

Proper busbar design ensures reliable operation, safety, and longevity of the switchgear assembly while minimizing maintenance and operational costs.
