The optical module is lit but the network is not working

Even if optical modules are lit, network connectivity can fail due to compatibility, fiber type mismatch, signal issues, or configuration errors.

Check Module Compatibility

Ensure that the optical modules are compatible with your switch or router. Non-certified or third-party modules may light up but fail to transmit data properly, causing network outages. Verify compatibility using the device's supported transceiver list or datasheet information.

Verify Fiber Type and Connections

Fiber type mismatch: Multi-mode modules require multi-mode fiber, and single-mode modules require single-mode fiber. Using the wrong type prevents proper transmission. Clean and secure connections: Dirty, loose, or damaged fiber connectors can cause signal loss even if the module lights up.

Inspect and clean connectors using proper fiber cleaning tools.

Measure Optical Signal

Use an optical power meter to check the received signal strength. Low or unstable signal levels can indicate attenuation, damaged cables, or aging modules, which disrupt data flow despite the link light being active.

Check Device Configuration

Ensure auto-negotiation settings and port configurations match on both ends of the link. Verify that the switch or router recognizes the module correctly using CLI commands (e.g., show interface transceiver on Cisco devices or display interface on Huawei devices),. If the module is recognized but the link is still down, try loopback testing to isolate the port or module.

Inspect Power and Environmental Factors

Confirm the power supply to the module is stable and cables are secure. Check that the module is operating within its specified temperature range, as overheating can cause intermittent or failed connectivity.

Replacement and Support

If all checks fail, consider replacing the optical module with a certified spare. Persistent issues may require contacting technical support for further diagnostics. By systematically checking compatibility, fiber type, signal strength, configuration, and environmental factors, you can identify why the optical modules are lit but the network remains non-functional.
