Laying direct-buried optical cables

Direct-buried optical cables must be installed with proper trench preparation, adequate burial depth, careful handling to maintain bend radius, and protective backfilling to ensure long-term performance and safety.

Trench Preparation and Backfilling

Before laying the cable, the trench bottom should be flat, free of debris, rocks, or hard clods, and, if necessary, lined with a 10 cm layer of fine soil or sand to cushion the cable. After laying the cable, a 30 cm protective layer of fine soil or sand should be backfilled gently, avoiding gravel, bricks, or hard soil blocks, and compacted manually to prevent damage. This ensures the cable is protected from mechanical stress and freezing conditions.

Cable Handling and Placement

Fiber optic cables are sensitive to excessive pulling force, sharp bends, and crushing, which can degrade transmission over time. When unspooling cable from reels, use a figure-eight configuration to prevent kinking or twisting. Avoid mechanized figure-eight eliminators, as they can damage the cable.

Cables should be laid flat at the trench bottom or bent naturally to release stress, never stepped on or forcibly bent. When multiple cables share a trench, they should be laid parallel and separately, without crossing or overlapping.

Burial Depth and Protection

The burial depth should comply with local regulations, frost conditions, and surface activity. Standard recommendations suggest sufficient depth to prevent damage from traffic, erosion, or excavation, with additional protection such as armored cable or conduit in high-risk areas. In rocky or unstable soil, reinforced conduits or split innerducts can provide extra protection.

Rodent-resistant armor may also be used where necessary.

Bend Radius and Slack Management

Maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer during installation and in storage coils. Slack cable at splice points should be coiled in handholes or buried carefully, observing the minimum bend and coil diameters to prevent fiber damage. Figure-eight coils of about 15 ft in length with loops 1.

5–2. 4 m in diameter are recommended for temporary storage.

Marking and Identification

Install markers at joints, turning points, intersections, and reserved lengths for future maintenance. Permanent reference points, such as nearby buildings or structures, can be used to record cable locations for easy identification.

Safety and Environmental Considerations

All personnel should follow OSHA regulations and company safety procedures during installation. Conduct a site survey to assess soil conditions, terrain, and existing utilities, and obtain necessary permits before construction. Use traffic cones or barricades to protect cable on pavements or exposed surfaces during installation.

By following these procedures—proper trenching, careful cable handling, correct burial depth, bend radius compliance, protective backfilling, and clear marking—direct-buried optical cables can achieve long-term reliability, minimal signal attenuation, and safe operation.
