Fiber Array in Optical Module

A Fiber Array (FA) is a precision optical component that aligns multiple optical fibers to enable high-density, low-loss coupling between fibers and photonic devices in optical modules.

Overview

A Fiber Array is a one-dimensional (1D) or two-dimensional (2D) arrangement of optical fibers, designed to ensure precise alignment between fiber cores or between fibers and photonic components such as planar waveguides or photonic integrated circuits (PICs). In optical modules, fiber arrays serve as the critical interface for high-speed data transmission, enabling efficient coupling in applications like 400G/800G transceivers, co-packaged optics (CPO), and AI computing interconnects.

Structure and Components

Fiber arrays are typically constructed using a V-groove substrate, where fibers are positioned at precise intervals (pitch) and secured with a cover plate. The fibers are then polished to ensure minimal insertion loss and high optical return loss. Key components include: V-Groove Substrate: Precisely etched grooves that hold fibers in alignment.

Optical Fibers: Single-mode or specialty fibers arranged in 1D or 2D matrices.

Cover Plate/

Lid: Protects fibers and maintains alignment, often made of glass, ceramic, or polymer. Bonding and Polishing: Ensures structural integrity and optimal optical performance.

Fabrication Process

The fabrication of fiber arrays involves several critical steps: Fiber Placement: Fibers are inserted into V-grooves or holes in a substrate with micron-level precision. Bonding: Fibers are fixed using adhesives or thermal bonding to maintain alignment. Polishing: Fiber endfaces are polished to reduce insertion loss and improve signal quality.

Quality Control: Core pitch, insertion loss, and return loss are measured to ensure compliance with specifications.

Applications in Optical Modules

Fiber arrays are essential in high-speed optical modules and photonic systems: Silicon Photonics & PICs: Coupling external fibers to on-chip waveguides.

High-

Speed Transceivers: Supporting 400G, 800G, and 1. 6T data rates in OSFP and QSFP-DD modules. Wavelength Selective Switches (WSS): Routing optical signals in ROADM networks.

A

I and Data Center Interconnects: Providing low-latency, high-density optical links between GPUs or racks. AdvantagesHigh-Density Connectivity: Supports multiple channels in compact form factors. Low Insertion Loss: Ensures efficient signal transmission.

Scalability: Facilitates parallel optical interconnects for large-scale systems. Reliability: Maintains precise alignment under environmental stress. Fiber arrays are thus a foundational component in modern optical modules, enabling high-performance, scalable, and reliable optical communication systems.
