Optical splitter and related equipment

An optical splitter connects upstream to an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) or central office equipment and downstream to multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or end-user devices.

Upstream Connection

The input side of the optical splitter is typically connected to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at the service provider's central office or main distribution frame. This device sends the optical signal into the splitter, which then distributes it to multiple downstream fibers. In some network configurations, the splitter may also receive signals from other upstream network nodes in a cascaded setup.

Downstream Connection

The output ports of the splitter connect to multiple Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or end-user devices. Each output fiber carries a portion of the original optical signal to individual homes, offices, or other customer premises. For example, in a Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) network, a 1: 32 splitter can serve 32 separate ONTs from a single input fiber.

Splitter Placement and Network Role

Optical splitters are usually installed in fiber distribution boxes, optical distribution frames (ODFs), or outdoor enclosures. They can operate in centralized splitting, where one splitter serves many users directly, or in cascaded splitting, where multiple splitters are used in stages to reach a larger number of users efficiently. In cascaded setups, the first splitter connects to the OLT, and its outputs feed secondary splitters, which then connect to ONTs.

Summary

Upstream device: Optical Line Terminal (OLT) or central office equipmentDownstream devices: Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) or end-user devicesFunction: Distributes a single optical signal to multiple users without active power, enabling efficient fiber resource utilization in PON and FTTH networks. This configuration allows a single fiber infrastructure to serve multiple users while maintaining signal quality and reducing deployment costs.
