Raw Materials for Fiber Optic Cables

Fiber optic cables are primarily made from ultra-pure silica glass for the core and cladding, with protective coatings, strengthening fibers, and durable jackets to ensure performance and durability.

Core and Cladding

The core is the central part of the fiber where light travels, typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂). In some cases, germanium or phosphorus compounds are added to adjust the refractive index for efficient light transmission. Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica glass but with a slightly lower refractive index to maintain total internal reflection, keeping light within the core.

Plastic cores are used in some short-distance or flexible applications, though they are less suitable for long-distance transmission.

Coatings

To protect the delicate glass fibers, dual-layer UV-cured acrylate coatings are applied. The primary coating is soft to cushion the fiber, while the secondary coating is harder to provide mechanical protection against abrasion and environmental stress. Color inks may also be used for fiber identification in multi-fiber cables.

Strengthening Materials

Fiber optic cables require tensile strength to prevent damage during installation. Common materials include: Aramid yarn (Kevlar): Provides high tensile strength and flexibility. Fiberglass rods or FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic): Adds rigidity and prevents bending.

Steel or metallic components: Used in some cables for grounding or additional mechanical protection.

Jacket Materials

The outer protective layer, or jacket, shields the cable from environmental hazards such as moisture, UV radiation, chemicals, and heat. Common materials include: High-density polyethylene (HDPE): Durable and UV-resistant, ideal for outdoor use. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC): Flexible and flame-resistant, often used indoors.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE): Used for enhanced flexibility and durability in specialized applications.

Water-

Blocking Materials

For outdoor or underground installations, water-blocking gels, tapes, or yarns are used to prevent moisture from reaching the fibers. These materials swell or form barriers when exposed to water, protecting the optical fibers from damage.

Additional Materials

Some fiber optic cables include ribbon matrices made from UV-curable resins, glass flakes, borates, or chemical repellents to enhance performance in specific environments. These proprietary additives improve durability, temperature resistance, and installation efficiency.

Summary

In essence, fiber optic cables combine highly transparent silica or plastic fibers with protective coatings, strengthening fibers, and durable jackets to ensure reliable, high-speed data transmission over long distances. The choice of materials depends on the application, environmental conditions, and required mechanical and optical performance.
