Indoor Optical Cable Flame Retardant Test Method

Indoor optical cables are tested for flame retardancy using standardized methods such as IEC 60332 and UL 1685, which evaluate flame propagation, smoke generation, and self-extinguishing properties.

IE

C 60332 StandardThe IEC 60332 series is widely used for testing flame propagation in both single and bunched cables. It includes: Single-cable tests (Parts 1 & 2): A 600 mm cable is clamped vertically 200 mm above a burner and exposed to a flame. The test evaluates whether the cable is self-extinguishing and measures the carbonization length, which must not exceed specified limits (e.g., 50 mm below the upper clamp) to pass the test.

Bunched-cable tests (Part 3): Simulates real installations where multiple cables are bundled. Cables are mounted on a ladder 3. 5 m high and exposed to a 20 kW or 40 kW ribbon burner depending on the category.

The pass criterion is typically a char height ≤ 2. 5 m above the burner. These tests ensure that flame spread is limited and that the cable does not contribute significantly to fire propagation in indoor environments.

U

L 1685 Vertical-Tray Flame TestThe UL 1685 test evaluates flame spread and smoke generation for optical and electrical cables in a vertical tray setup: Cables are placed in a steel ladder tray mounted vertically in a test chamber. A propane-air ribbon burner ignites the cables for 20 minutes, simulating realistic fire conditions. Pass criteria include: Char height ≤ 8 feetTotal smoke release < 95 m²Peak smoke release < 0.

25 m²/s This method is particularly relevant for cable trays in commercial buildings and ensures compliance with safety regulations.

Single-

Cable Flame Tests

Some manufacturers also perform single-cable vertical flame tests according to IEC/EN 60332-1-1: The cable is secured vertically and exposed to a flame at a 20°–45° angle. A paper indicator flag is used to detect flame propagation. The cable must self-extinguish and the flame damage must remain below a defined distance from the clamp.

Certification and Compliance

Flame retardant optical cables are typically tested and certified by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) such as Intertek (ETL) to ensure compliance with NEC® 2023 and other safety standards. These certifications confirm that the cables meet industry requirements for indoor installations, limiting fire hazards and smoke toxicity.

Summary

Indoor optical cable flame retardant testing involves: IEC 60332 for vertical flame propagation (single and bunched cables)UL 1685 for vertical-tray flame and smoke assessmentSingle-cable vertical flame tests for self-extinguishing verificationCertification by recognized laboratories to ensure compliance with safety codes These methods collectively ensure that indoor optical cables minimize fire risk, limit flame spread, and reduce smoke hazards in buildings.
