Cable Tray Specifications and Material Standards

Cable trays are manufactured from materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic, each selected for mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and environmental suitability. Common Cable Tray Materials1. SteelPre-galvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel are widely used for their strength and cost-effectiveness.

Hot-dip galvanization provides a protective zinc layer that corrodes sacrificially, protecting the steel underneath, and is suitable for wet or industrial environments. Mechanical properties: High load-bearing capacity, suitable for heavy-duty installations. Applications: Indoor, industrial, and commercial installations where moderate corrosion resistance is sufficient.

2.

Stainless Steel

Grades 304 and 316 are common. 304 stainless steel resists rust and most oxidizing acids, while 316 stainless steel contains 2–3% molybdenum, enhancing resistance to chlorides and industrial solvents. Mechanical properties: Excellent corrosion resistance, good formability, and durability.

Applications: Coastal, chemical, outdoor, and high-saline environments, as well as medical or food processing facilities. 3.

Aluminum

Aluminum alloys are lightweight, corrosion-resistant due to a natural oxide layer, and easily formable. Mechanical properties: Moderate strength, high corrosion resistance, and low weight. Applications: Outdoor installations, corrosive atmospheres, and areas requiring easy handling and installation.

4.

Fiberglass-

Reinforced Plastic (FRP)Manufactured using pultrusion with polyester or vinyl ester resin, FRP trays offer high corrosion resistance and a favorable strength-to-weight ratio. Mechanical properties: Non-conductive, lightweight, and resistant to chemical corrosion. Applications: Highly corrosive environments, chemical plants, and areas where electrical insulation is required.

Finishes and Coatings

Powder coating or painting can be applied to steel or aluminum trays for additional corrosion protection and aesthetic purposes. Electro-galvanization provides a thinner zinc layer, suitable for less aggressive environments, while hot-dip galvanization ensures full coverage, including edges and joints.

Standards and Compliance

Cable trays are manufactured in accordance with NEMA, UL, ASTM, and BS EN standards, ensuring mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and safety. Stainless steel chemical composition and corrosion resistance are defined by ASTM 9108-94 and BS EN 10088-1: 2014.

C

E marking and third-party certifications (UL, LCIE, IMQ) indicate compliance with European and international directives.

Selection Considerations

Environment: Choose materials based on exposure to moisture, chemicals, or saline conditions. Load requirements: Steel for heavy loads, aluminum or FRP for lighter loads. Electrical insulation: FRP provides non-conductive properties.

Maintenance and longevity: Stainless steel and FRP require minimal maintenance in corrosive environments. By selecting the appropriate material and finish, cable trays can provide reliable, long-term support for power, data, and communication cabling in diverse industrial, commercial, and outdoor applications.
