Do gigabit single-mode optical modules have to be used in pairs

Standard gigabit single-mode SFP modules do not need to be used in pairs, but bidirectional (BiDi) SFPs must be deployed in complementary pairs for proper operation.

Standard Single-

Mode SFP Modules

For typical duplex single-mode SFP modules, each module transmits on one fiber and receives on another. In a fiber link, you simply install a compatible SFP at each end of the fiber, and the modules do not need to be specially paired beyond matching the type (e.g., 1000BASE-LX, 1000BASE-EX) and wavelength. The modules convert electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa, allowing standard single-mode fiber links to operate over distances ranging from 10 km to over 70 km depending on the module specifications and fiber quality.

Bidirectional (BiDi) SFP ModulesBiDi SFPs are designed to transmit and receive data over a single fiber using two different wavelengths. Because of this, a BiDi module at one end must be paired with a complementary BiDi module at the other end, where the transmit (TX) wavelength of one module matches the receive (RX) wavelength of the other. Without this complementary pairing, the link will not function.

This is a key consideration when planning single-fiber deployments to reduce fiber usage.

Practical Considerations

Wavelength Matching: Ensure that the TX and RX wavelengths are compatible for the chosen fiber type. Link Distance: Verify that the module's optical power and receiver sensitivity support the intended distance. Fiber Type: Single-mode fiber is required for long-distance links; multimode fiber is used for shorter distances.

Attenuators: For very short single-mode links, inline optical attenuators may be needed to prevent receiver overload. In summary, standard duplex single-mode SFPs can be used independently at each end of a fiber link, while BiDi single-mode SFPs must always be used in matched pairs to ensure proper bidirectional communication.
