An air switch in a distribution box is a type of low-voltage circuit breaker that automatically disconnects power when current exceeds safe limits, using air to extinguish the arc. What is an Air Switch? An air switch is essentially a circuit breaker used in distribution boxes to protect electrical circuits from overcurrent, short circuits, and leakage.

It is called an "air switch" because it uses air as the medium to extinguish the arc that forms when the contacts separate during a trip. This ensures safe and rapid disconnection of the circuit, preventing damage to wiring and appliances. They automatically cut off power when the current exceeds the rated value, protecting both the electrical system and users. Distribution boxes consolidate wiring, house protective devices, and simplify maintenance for household or HVAC systems.

Types and Ratings

Air switches are selected based on the type of circuit and load: General household circuits: Double-pole 32–63A air switches or isolation switches. Lighting circuits: 10–16A small air switches. Socket circuits: 16–20A air switches.

Air conditioning circuits: 16–25A air switches. They can be bipolar (phase + neutral) or 1P + N, ensuring both phase and neutral lines are disconnected during faults for safety.

Installation Guidelines

Install the distribution box on a stable surface and prepare wiring conductors, ties, and other accessories according to design drawings. Mount the guide rail horizontally and align with the cover's air-opening operation hole. Arrange switches from left to right, keeping reserved positions intact for proper spacing and operation.

High-power appliances like air conditioners or kitchen outlets may require dedicated circuits with appropriately rated air switches.
