How to store cable trays

Proper storage of cable trays involves stacking them safely, protecting them from environmental damage, and organizing by type and size for easy access.

General Storage Guidelines

Choose a Suitable Location Store cable trays in a dry, clean, and well-ventilated area to prevent corrosion, especially for metal trays like steel or aluminum. Avoid areas with high humidity, direct sunlight, or chemical exposure, as these can degrade coatings or materials over time.

Stacking and Support

Flat stacking: Lay trays flat on a stable surface, ensuring the weight is evenly distributed to prevent bending or warping. Vertical storage: For long trays, vertical racks can save space, but ensure they are secured to prevent tipping. Use spacers: Place wooden or plastic spacers between trays to avoid scratching or denting, particularly for perforated or wire mesh trays.

Segregate by Type and Size Organize trays by type (ladder, perforated, wire mesh, channel) and length. This makes it easier to retrieve the correct tray for installation and reduces handling damage. Protective Covering Cover trays with plastic sheeting or tarps to prevent dust accumulation and moisture exposure.

For outdoor storage, use waterproof covers and elevate trays off the ground to avoid water contact. Labeling and Inventory Clearly label each stack or section with tray type, size, and material. This helps maintain inventory control and ensures quick identification during installation.

Handling Precautions

Avoid dragging trays across rough surfaces. Use lifting equipment for heavy or long trays to prevent bending. Keep sharp tools or objects away from trays to avoid scratches or punctures.

Material-

Specific Considerations

Steel trays: Ensure they are coated or galvanized to prevent rust; avoid prolonged exposure to moisture. Aluminum trays: Lightweight but prone to scratches; handle carefully and avoid stacking too high. Fiberglass trays: Resistant to corrosion but can crack under heavy loads; store on flat surfaces with support.

By following these storage practices, cable trays remain in good condition, are easy to access, and are ready for safe installation when needed. Proper organization also reduces the risk of workplace accidents and material damage.
