The Function of Fiber Optic Thermometer Sensors

Fiber optic thermometer sensors provide precise, non-electrical temperature measurement with immunity to electromagnetic interference, suitable for harsh and high-voltage environments.

Working Principle

Fiber optic temperature sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a temperature-sensitive element, such as a Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) crystal or other semiconductors like CdTe or Si. The temperature changes the optical properties of the crystal, such as absorption or transmission, which shifts the wavelength of the reflected or transmitted light. This shift is measured and converted into an accurate temperature reading.

Some systems use interferometric methods (e.g., Mach-Zehnder interferometers) for higher sensitivity, while non-interferometric types rely on direct wavelength shifts. Types of Fiber Optic Temperature SensorsNon-Interferometric Sensors: Use a semiconductor crystal at the fiber tip; simple, fast, and accurate for point measurements. Interferometric Sensors: Employ phase modulation to detect temperature changes; suitable for high-sensitivity applications and flexible geometries.

Distributed Temperature Sensors (DTS): Measure temperature along the entire length of the fiber using Rayleigh, Brillouin, or Raman scattering, providing continuous temperature profiles over long distances (up to 50 km),. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensors: Multipoint sensors embedded in a single fiber, capable of measuring temperature and strain simultaneously.

Advantages

Electromagnetic Immunity: Fully non-metallic design prevents interference from RF, microwave, or high-voltage environments. High Precision: Accuracy can reach ±0. 2 K with fast response times (milliseconds to seconds),.

Wide Temperature Range: Typically from -200°C to +300°C, with some short-term ranges up to +572°C. Flexible Installation: Lightweight, small-diameter fibers can be routed in confined or hazardous areas. Safety: Non-conductive and intrinsically safe for explosive or high-voltage environments.

Applications

Industrial: Power transformers, switchgear, semiconductor processing, induction heating, and chemical plants. Medical: MRI-compatible probes, laser ablation, catheter instrumentation. Research and Aerospace: High-voltage, RF, and microwave environments requiring precise temperature monitoring.

Predictive Maintenance: Continuous monitoring of plant equipment, bus bars, and conveyor systems to detect abnormal temperature rises early.

OverviewStructureMeasurement principleApplicationsFiber optic vendors

One type of fibre optic temperature probe consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductor crystal that is mounted on the end of an optical fibre. The probe is completely non-metallic. The fibre optical sensor is completely non-conductive and offers complete immunity to RFI, EMI, NMR and microwave radiation with high temperature operating capability, intrinsic safety, and non-invasive use.
