Gas and Fiber Optic Cables

Fiber optic cables themselves do not carry gas, but they can be used to detect and monitor gases in industrial and environmental applications.

Fiber Optics in Hazardous Environments

Fiber optic cables transmit data as light pulses rather than electrical currents, which makes them inherently safer in explosive atmospheres because they do not produce sparks or arcs that could ignite flammable gases. However, while the light itself is generally safe, damaged or improperly spliced cables can generate localized heat that may ignite gases in hazardous areas, so compliance with standards like IEC/EN 60079-28: 2015 is essential.

Gas Detection Using Fiber Optics

Fiber optic cables can be transformed into distributed sensing systems to detect gases along pipelines or in environmental monitoring.

Distributed Fibre-

Optic Sensing (DFOS) systems, such as DTS (temperature), DAS (acoustic), and DSS (strain), can detect leaks or changes in gas pipelines by monitoring temperature, strain, and vibrations along the cable. These systems are particularly useful for flammable gases like hydrogen, methane, or natural gas, providing real-time alerts to prevent accidents and environmental damage.

GASPOF Project

The GASPO

F initiative integrates gas sensing into operational fiber optic networks using advanced optical technologies: Laser-based Photoacoustic Spectroscopy: Detects tiny gas concentrations by measuring sound waves generated when lasers interact with gas molecules. Laser Heterodyne Radiometry: Provides high-precision gas detection by targeting specific spectral ranges.

Coherent Optical Time-

Domain Reflectometry: Monitors changes in light signals along the fiber to detect environmental disturbances. This approach allows existing fiber networks to simultaneously transmit data and monitor gases like methane, CO₂, and sulfur dioxide, enabling cost-effective and real-time environmental monitoring.

Practical Applications

Industrial Safety: Fiber optics reduce ignition risks in areas with flammable gases, such as refineries or chemical plants. Pipeline Monitoring: DFOS systems detect leaks, strain, and vibrations, helping operators prevent gas escapes and structural failures. Environmental Monitoring: GASPOF and similar technologies allow large-scale monitoring of greenhouse gases and volcanic activity without additional probes or power sources.

Summary

While fiber optic cables do not transport gas, they are a powerful tool for detecting, monitoring, and managing gases in both industrial and environmental contexts. Their immunity to electrical interference, ability to cover long distances, and integration with advanced sensing technologies make them ideal for safety-critical and real-time gas monitoring applications.
