Branch circuits in the distribution box

Branch circuits are the individual wiring paths that carry electricity from a distribution box to outlets, lights, and appliances, each protected by its own circuit breaker or fuse.

Overview of Branch Circuits

A branch circuit is the final stage of electrical distribution from a distribution box (DB) to the devices it serves. After power enters the distribution box and passes through protective devices such as circuit breakers or fuses, it is divided into multiple branch circuits, each supplying a specific area, room, or appliance within a building. Branch circuits ensure that electricity is delivered safely and efficiently while preventing overloads and short circuits.

Types of Branch CircuitsGeneral-Purpose CircuitsDesigned to power multiple outlets and lighting fixtures in a room or area. Typically use 15-ampere or 20-ampere breakers. Require conductor sizes that match the breaker rating: 14-gauge copper for 15A, 12-gauge copper for 20A.

Maximum continuous load is usually limited to 80% of the breaker rating to prevent overheating.

Dedicated Circuits

Serve a single appliance or high-power device, such as electric ranges, water heaters, clothes dryers, or HVAC units. May require 30A, 40A, or 50A breakers and sometimes 240V power using double-pole breakers. Conductor size must correspond to the higher current rating to ensure safety.

Components and Safety Features

Each branch circuit is connected to the distribution box via a circuit breaker or fuse, which interrupts the flow of electricity if the current exceeds safe limits. Other key components include: Busbars: Conduct and distribute power from the main supply to each breaker. Residual Current Devices (RCDs) or RCBOs: Detect leakage currents and prevent electric shocks.

Isolators or switches: Allow circuits to be safely turned off for maintenance. Neutral and earth bars: Provide return paths and grounding for safety.

Practical Considerations

Proper conductor sizing is critical to match the breaker rating and prevent overheating. Branch circuits should be clearly labeled in the distribution box for easy identification. Overloading a branch circuit can cause tripped breakers or fire hazards, so load distribution should be planned carefully.

Modern distribution boxes may include smart monitoring units to track energy usage and detect faults in branch circuits. Branch circuits are essential for organizing electrical distribution, protecting wiring and devices, and ensuring safe operation throughout residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

North American distribution boards are generally housed in sheet metal enclosures, with the circuit breakers positioned in two columns operable from the front. Some panelboards are provided with a door covering the breaker switch handles, but all are constructed with a dead front; that is to say the front of the enclosure (whether it has a door or not) prevents the operator of the circuit breakers from contacting live electrical parts within. Busbars carry the current from incoming line (hot) conductors to the breakers
