Principles of Optical Cable Materials

Optical cables are composed of ultra-pure silica cores, doped claddings, polymer coatings, and protective jackets, designed for high transparency, mechanical strength, and environmental resistance.

Core and Cladding

The core of an optical fiber is typically made from ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium to control the refractive index, which enables efficient light transmission through total internal reflection. Surrounding the core is the cladding, also made of silica but with a slightly lower refractive index, ensuring that light remains confined within the core. In some high-performance fibers, fluorine-doped glass is used to further reduce the refractive index and minimize signal loss.

Coatings and Protective Layers

Optical fibers are coated with dual-layer UV-cured acrylate polymers: a soft primary coating to cushion the glass and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection. These coatings protect against moisture, dust, and microbending, enhancing durability. Additional layers, such as buffer tubes made from polybutyleneterephthalate (PBT) or tough resin, provide structural integrity and prevent fiber damage during installation.

Strength Members

To resist tensile stress and maintain performance under mechanical strain, optical cables include strength members such as aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass reinforced plastic (G-FRP), or steel wires for metallic cables. These materials have high tensile modulus and provide stability during bending, pulling, or temperature variations.

Water and Environmental Protection

Cables often incorporate water-blocking elements, including polyester filaments, superabsorbent resins, and swellable tapes, to prevent moisture ingress. The outer jacket is typically made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or other UV-resistant polymers, providing protection against sunlight, abrasion, and chemical exposure. Some designs include gel compounds or specialized coatings to enhance performance in outdoor or aerial installations.

Plastic Optical Fibers

For short-distance applications, plastic optical fibers (POF) are used. These fibers are made from transparent polymers, offering flexibility and ease of installation, though they have higher signal attenuation compared to glass fibers. Polymer-based cladding and acrylate coatings are used to improve flexibility and mechanical protection.

Key Material Properties

High transparency: Silica and polymer materials allow light to pass with minimal loss. Mechanical strength: Kevlar, G-FRP, and steel provide tensile resistance. Environmental resistance: HDPE jackets, UV-cured coatings, and water-blocking elements protect against moisture, temperature, and UV exposure.

Flexibility and durability: Coatings and buffer layers prevent microbending and maintain long-term performance. These carefully selected materials ensure that optical cables deliver high-speed, reliable, and long-lasting communication across various environments, from indoor networks to long-distance telecommunication systems.
