Internet Energy Project

The Energy Internet Project envisions a cyber-physical network that integrates energy, information, and financial flows to optimize electricity production, distribution, and consumption using advanced technologies.

Concept and Vision

The Energy Internet is a futuristic evolution of the electricity system, conceptualized as a network for energy sharing that enables real-time, bidirectional flows of energy, information, and money. It integrates small-scale renewable energy systems, storage devices, electric vehicles, and flexible loads to facilitate efficient energy transactions. The system is designed to operate with plug-and-play mechanisms, allowing energy prosumers to actively participate in local and global energy markets.

Technological Framework

Key technologies underpinning the Energy Internet include: Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time monitoring and control of energy devices.

Vehicle-to-

Grid (V2G) systems to allow electric vehicles to act as distributed energy resources. Blockchain and secure digital platforms for transparent and automated energy transactions. Packetized energy management, where energy is virtualized into discrete packets to optimize supply-demand matching and grid stability.

A

I and digital twins for predictive energy management, fault detection, and optimization across the energy lifecycle.

Operational Principles

The Energy Internet operates as a large-scale cyber-physical system, where energy requests from devices like EV chargers or water boilers are managed by an energy server. Requests can be granted, scheduled, or denied based on grid conditions and user priorities. This approach allows scalable, flexible, and efficient energy distribution, while maintaining grid reliability and quality of supply.

Research and Implementation

Currently, there is no fully scaled-up Energy Internet, but several projects are exploring its feasibility: Internet of Energy for Electric Mobility (IoE) focuses on connecting embedded systems in the power grid to enable smart, secure, and interoperable electric mobility infrastructure. Experimental deployments at research campuses, such as LUT Green Campus, are testing packetized energy management and communication protocols for large-scale implementation.

Challenges and Future Directions

The Energy Internet faces technological, regulatory, and operational challenges, including: Developing energy management algorithms capable of handling combinatorial allocation problems while satisfying grid and user requirements. Ensuring ultra-reliable, low-latency communication for massive device connectivity, leveraging 5G and future wireless technologies. Establishing governance and regulatory frameworks to allow coexistence of multiple algorithms and market models without compromising grid stability.

The Energy Internet represents a transformative approach to electricity systems, promising enhanced efficiency, renewable integration, and active consumer participation, potentially becoming the dominant model for future smart grids.
