Analysis of Causes of Optical Cable Breakage

Optical cable breakage is primarily caused by external forces, environmental conditions, intrinsic fiber defects, and human factors.

Types of Optical Cable Faults

Optical cable failures can be categorized into three main types: complete cable interruption, partial bundle tube interruption, and partial fiber interruption within a single bundle. Complete breaks result in total signal loss, while partial interruptions may affect only some fibers, often making detection and repair more challenging.

External Factors

External forces are a leading cause of cable breakage. These include excavation damage, accidental cuts during construction, and vandalism. Even minor mechanical stress, such as bending beyond the cable's minimum radius, can cause micro-bending or fiber fractures over time.

Rodent or animal bites, as well as impacts from vehicles or equipment, also contribute to physical damage.

Environmental and Natural Causes

Environmental conditions significantly affect cable integrity. Temperature extremes can cause the cable sheath to shrink or expand, inducing stress on the fibers and leading to micro-bending or breakage. Water ingress into splice boxes or cable joints can chemically degrade the fiber by breaking silicon-oxygen bonds, resulting in increased attenuation or fiber failure.

Natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, lightning strikes, and strong winds can also damage cables.

Intrinsic Cable Defects

Some failures originate from the fiber itself. Optical fibers are made of glass and plastic, which are inherently fragile. Static fatigue over time, hydrogen-induced attenuation, or manufacturing defects can weaken the fiber.

Modern fibers, such as ITU G. 652 C/D, are designed to resist hydrogen aging and maintain low attenuation, but improper handling or installation stress can still lead to breakage.

Human Factors

Human error during installation or maintenance is another major contributor. Excessive bending, improper splicing, or mechanical stress during cable laying can damage fibers. Inadequate protection in joint boxes or failure to follow installation standards increases the likelihood of long-term failures.

Preventive Measures

To mitigate optical cable breakage, it is essential to: Follow proper installation standards and maintain minimum bending radii. Use waterproof and rodent-resistant cable designs. Conduct regular inspections and maintenance to detect early signs of stress or damage.

Employ advanced fault detection techniques like Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) for precise fault localization. Understanding these causes allows for better cable design, installation practices, and maintenance strategies, ultimately improving reliability and reducing operational costs.
