Iraq fiber optic cable

Iraq is rapidly expanding its fiber optic network through domestic FTTH projects, international submarine cables, and strategic terrestrial routes connecting Europe and Asia.

Domestic Fiber Networks

Iraq is actively rolling out fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) services to improve internet speed and reliability for residential and business users. Companies like FiberX provide high-speed internet in provinces such as Basra and Wasit, using advanced fiber optic technologies from Nokia and Huawei to ensure quality and stability. The Ministry of Communications is overseeing nationwide expansion, aiming to extend fiber connectivity to villages and rural areas while gradually phasing out Wi-Fi subscriptions.

International Connectivity

Iraq is enhancing its global internet capacity through submarine cable projects. Agreements with companies like Ooredoo Group and Bahraini partners are establishing undersea cables at the Al-Faw station, connecting Iraq to over 200 global cables and significantly boosting international bandwidth. These initiatives are part of the “Iraqi Corridor”, a strategic route for international telecommunications traffic from Singapore through Iraq to Turkey and Europe.

Terrestrial Fiber Routes

The Silk Route Transit is a major terrestrial fiber-optic network spanning over 3,500 kilometers across Iraq. Operated by iQ Group, it provides a secure, low-latency route connecting Europe to Asia, bypassing the Suez Canal bottleneck. The network is deployed alongside Iraq's strategic oil pipeline and includes six cable landing stations, such as the Rabia Cable Landing Station, which links Iraq to Syria and Turkey.

Service Providers and Infrastructure Companies

Several companies supply fiber optic solutions and infrastructure in Iraq, including HezrraLink, which offers fiber cables, structured cabling, and network racks for IT, telecom, and enterprise sectors. These providers support both large-scale infrastructure projects and smaller network deployments, ensuring high-quality connectivity across the country. Strategic GoalsIraq's fiber optic initiatives aim to: Modernize the national digital infrastructureProvide high-speed, reliable internet to homes and businessesEstablish Iraq as a regional hub for international data transitSupport economic growth and digital transformation through advanced telecommunications Overall, Iraq's fiber optic network is expanding rapidly, combining domestic FTTH deployment, international submarine links, and strategic terrestrial routes to enhance connectivity, reduce latency, and improve internet quality for both local users and international carriers.
