How to install diagonal elbows on cable trays

Diagonal elbows on cable trays are installed by cutting the tray sections to fit the angle, connecting with splice kits, and ensuring proper grounding and alignment.

Step-by-

Step Installation1. Plan the Route and Angle Before installation, mark the cable tray path and determine the exact angle for the diagonal elbow. Ensure the tray route allows for proper clearance, load capacity, and cable separation requirements.

2. Cut Tray Sections Measure and cut the tray sections to match the diagonal angle. Use a suitable cutting tool, such as a manual offset angled cutting tool or equivalent, to ensure clean cuts without damaging the tray.

Remove any side or bottom wires as needed to accommodate the elbow. 3. Prepare for Connection Install splice kits (standard or bar splice kits) at the ends of the cut sections.

Always position bolt heads on the inside of the tray to protect cables from abrasion. Ensure the number of splice kits corresponds to the number of tray sections removed for the turn. 4.

Assemble the Elbow Attach the cut tray sections to form the diagonal elbow. Align the sections carefully to maintain a smooth path for cables and avoid sharp bends that could damage insulation. Secure all connections tightly using the provided hardware.

5. Grounding and Bonding Install a ground conductor along the elbow to maintain electrical continuity and bonding across the removed sections. For painted or non-UL classified trays, remove any plastic masking to expose the metal and ensure proper bonding using approved connectors.

This step is critical for safety and compliance with NEC and CE codes. 6. Final Checks Verify that the elbow is level, properly aligned, and securely fastened.

Ensure that the bend radius meets cable manufacturer recommendations to prevent stress on the cables. Confirm that the installation does not exceed load ratings or cable fill limits. By following these steps, diagonal elbows can be safely and effectively integrated into a cable tray system, maintaining both structural integrity and electrical safety.
