Distance of the distribution box passage

The minimum clearance around a distribution box should generally be 0. 6–1 meter in front, with side and height clearances sufficient for safe operation, maintenance, and emergency access.

Front and Side Clearances

For safe access to a distribution box or switchboard, maintain a minimum front clearance of 1 meter for commercial or industrial setups, while domestic installations may allow 0. 6 meters. Side clearances should be at least 0.

6 meters or equal to the width of the equipment to ensure unobstructed access for maintenance and inspection. The height clearance in front of the equipment should be at least 2. 2 meters or the height of the equipment, whichever is greater.

Passage and Emergency Access

Distribution boxes must be positioned so that access is never blocked by walls, furniture, or other fixtures. For large switchboards (over 800 A per phase or longer than 3 meters), two emergency exits are recommended unless a clear space of 3 meters is provided in front. Doors to switchboard rooms should open outward without requiring a key or tool from the inside to allow quick evacuation.

Junction Box Spacing

For wiring inside walls, junction boxes should be placed at intervals of up to 15 meters indoors and 30 meters outdoors in a straight line. For bends or 90° curves, reduce the distance by 3 meters per curve. Junction boxes must be easily accessible, properly closed, and installed according to technical standards to facilitate maintenance and ensure safety.

Electrical Clearance Inside the Box

Within the distribution box, maintain at least 20 mm clearance between live components and the metal enclosure or grounding devices. The creepage distance along insulating surfaces should exceed the electrical clearance to prevent arcing or insulation failure.

Summary

Front clearance: 0. 6–1 meter (depending on domestic or commercial setup)Side clearance: ≥0. 6 meters or width of equipmentHeight clearance: ≥2.

2 meters or equipment heightJunction box spacing: 15 m indoors, 30 m outdoors, reduced by 3 m per 90° bendInternal electrical clearance: ≥20 mm between live parts and grounded surfaces These distances ensure safe operation, maintenance, and compliance with electrical standards while minimizing the risk of electrical hazards.
