OTN Router PAM4 Import

PAM4 modulation enables high-speed OTN interfaces, such as 400G, to be integrated into routers using FPGA-based or modular optical solutions. PAM4 in OTN RoutersPAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation with 4 levels) is increasingly used in OTN routers to achieve higher data rates over existing optical infrastructure. It allows 400G and beyond transmission by encoding two bits per symbol, effectively doubling the data rate compared to NRZ signaling at the same baud rate.

PAM4 interfaces are compatible with OTU4, OTU3, and other OTN line rates, and can be deployed over short to medium distances depending on optical components and equalization techniques. FPGA-Based ImplementationFPGAs are commonly used to implement PAM4 OTN interfaces due to their reprogrammability, high-speed I/O support, and protocol flexibility. They allow dynamic switching between NRZ and PAM4, adjustment of line rates, and integration with multiple protocols such as Ethernet, IP/MPLS, and PTP/SyncE.

Partial reconfiguration enables some interfaces to change modulation schemes without interrupting ongoing traffic, making FPGAs ideal for field-upgradable OTN routers. 400G PAM4 ConfigurationA typical 400G PAM4 OTN setup uses 4x112Gbps lanes (CDAUI-16 electrical interface) with 100G-LR4 LAN-WDM wavelengths. High-bandwidth optical devices like EML TOSA and PIN ROSA are required, along with PAM4 coding/decoding, equalization, and FEC to maintain signal integrity over distances such as 2 km of SMF.

MUX/DeMUX lanes are used to combine or separate the four PAM4 channels, compatible with existing 100G-LR4 passive components.

PLE and Bit-

Transparent Transport

Private Line Emulation (PLE) allows bit-level transparent transport of OTN traffic over packet-switched networks (MPLS or Ethernet) without dedicated OTN systems.

PL

E encapsulates OTN frames into VPWS pseudowires, maintaining the original clock and latency characteristics. This enables OTN services to interwork with IP/MPLS networks while preserving SLAs.

FPG

As can implement PLE functions, combining OTN, Ethernet, and other protocols seamlessly. Standards and InteroperabilityPAM4 OTN interfaces follow ITU-T G. 709/Y.

1331 standards and can interoperate across vendors using multilane interfaces (MFI) with 11G, 28G, or 56G physical lanes. Electrical characteristics are defined by OIF-CEI specifications, ensuring compatibility for high-speed optical modules and framer devices.

Summary

Integrating PAM4 into OTN routers involves: Using PAM4 modulation for high-speed 400G+ links. Implementing FPGA-based solutions for flexibility, partial reconfiguration, and protocol adaptation. Configuring 4x112Gbps lanes with appropriate optical devices and FEC for reliable transmission.

Leveraging PL

E for bit-transparent transport over packet networks. Ensuring standards compliance for interoperability across vendors. This approach allows service providers to upgrade OTN capacity efficiently while maintaining compatibility with existing network infrastructure and client services.
