Cable tray layout at the construction site

Proper cable tray placement ensures safe, organized, and code-compliant routing of electrical cables while allowing for maintenance and future expansion.

Planning and Site Preparation

Before installation, review approved shop drawings and the Bill of Quantities (BOQ) to confirm tray routes, lengths, and load requirements. Ensure the site is clean, free of obstructions, and civil works are completed. Mark horizontal and vertical tray routes, coordinating with other services to avoid clashes and maintain sufficient clearance for cable pulling and maintenance.

Tray Types and Material Selection

Ladder trays: Ideal for power cables and large conductors; provide excellent ventilation and convenient tie points. Ventilated trough trays: Better for smaller control and instrumentation cables; prevent sagging between rungs. Materials: Choose based on environment—steel or aluminum for general use, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) for corrosive or high-moisture areas.

Support and Spacing

Supports must be installed at regular intervals to prevent sagging and maintain structural integrity. Typical spacing is 1. 5 meters for short spans and 3 meters for longer spans, depending on tray size and load.

Use C-channels, load-bearing cleats, and expansion bolts for secure attachment to walls, slabs, or ceilings. Ensure vertical trays have proper cleats and horizontal trays are level and parallel to building features.

Clearances and Routing

Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance. Avoid hoistways or enclosed spaces; trays must remain accessible. Separate high-power and low-power cables to prevent electromagnetic interference, and do not exceed 40% fill for power cables and 50% for control cables.

Ensure bends, tees, and reducers allow the minimum permissible radius for the largest cable.

Grounding and Safety

Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors if compliant with NEC requirements. Install earth continuity strips at all joints and connect separate grounding cables to the earth bar. Remove sharp edges and apply galvanized paint on cut edges to prevent rusting.

All personnel should follow safety induction and use proper PPE during installation.

Material Handling

Store trays horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports at 1-meter intervals, protecting them from moisture and sunlight. Inspect all materials for damage before installation and remove unsuitable items from the site.

Installation Best Practices

Follow approved shop drawings and method statements. Install trays neatly, ensuring vertical, horizontal, or parallel alignment with building features. Provide support within 300 mm of joints and bends.

Ensure proper cable management to prevent overheating and mechanical damage. By adhering to these guidelines, cable tray systems will be safe, durable, and compliant with NEC standards, facilitating efficient cable routing and future maintenance.
