DC Cable Tray Selection Standards

Ladder-type cable trays are generally the preferred choice for DC power cables due to their superior ventilation, heat dissipation, and load-bearing capacity.

Ladder Cable Trays

Ladder trays consist of two side rails connected by transverse rungs, forming an open structure that allows air to circulate freely around the cables. This design is particularly important for DC power cables, which can generate significant heat due to continuous current flow. The open construction helps maintain cable ampacity and prevents overheating, making ladder trays ideal for high-current DC systems such as solar photovoltaic arrays, battery banks, and industrial DC distribution networks.

Ladder trays also support heavy cable loads and long spans, simplifying installation and maintenance.

Perforated Cable Trays

Perforated or ventilated trough trays feature a solid bottom with regularly spaced holes or slots. They provide moderate ventilation and continuous support for smaller or medium-sized DC cables. These trays are suitable when some protection from debris or accidental contact is needed, while still allowing heat dissipation.

They are often used for medium-voltage DC cables or installations where cable sag must be minimized.

Solid-

Bottom Cable TraysSolid-bottom trays offer maximum protection from environmental hazards such as dust, moisture, or falling objects. However, they restrict airflow, which can reduce the ampacity of DC cables. Solid-bottom trays are recommended only when mechanical protection is critical and the heat generated by the DC cables is within safe limits, or when additional cooling measures are implemented.

Material Considerations

The choice of tray material affects durability and environmental resistance: Galvanized steel: Common for indoor and moderately corrosive environments. Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, suitable for outdoor or rooftop DC installations. Stainless steel: Ideal for harsh chemical or marine environments.

FR

P (Fiber Reinforced Plastic): Best for highly corrosive or non-metallic applications.

Best Practices

Ensure tray sizing and fill comply with NEC 392 guidelines to avoid overheating. Maintain adequate spacing between DC cables to allow heat dissipation. Use supports and spans consistent with the tray load rating.

Segregate D

C power cables from sensitive communication or control cables to prevent interference. Summary: For most DC cable installations, ladder-type trays are preferred for their ventilation and load capacity. Perforated trays are suitable for medium loads or where some protection is needed, while solid-bottom trays are reserved for environments requiring maximum mechanical protection.

Material selection should match environmental conditions and corrosion resistance requirements.
