Power supply from the PoE switch

A PoE switch receives power from its internal AC or DC power supply, which it then manages to deliver regulated DC power to connected PoE devices over Ethernet cables. How a PoE Switch Receives PowerA PoE switch is powered by an internal power supply, which can be AC or DC depending on the model. The total power available for PoE devices depends on the capacity of the installed power supply.

If the power supply is replaced with one of lower capacity, the switch may not be able to provide power to all connected devices, and it will prioritize ports based on configuration, often starting with the highest port numbers first (Cisco).

Power Delivery to Devices

Once powered, the PoE switch acts as a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE). When a powered device (PD) is connected, the switch performs a detection test to verify that the device supports PoE. It then sends a classification signal to determine the device's power class, which ranges from Class 0 to Class 8 depending on the standard (IEEE 802.

3af, 802. 3at, or 802. 3bt).

After classification, the switch ramps up the voltage to a stable 48V DC and supplies the required power to the device.

Po

E Standards and ModesPoE switches support different standards: IEEE 802. 3af (PoE): Up to 15. 4W per portIEEE 802.

3at (PoE+): Up to 30W per portIEEE 802. 3bt (PoE++/4PPoE): Up to 60–90W per port Power can be delivered over data pairs (Mode A) or spare pairs (Mode B), or all four pairs in 4PPoE mode for higher power devices. The switch ensures that power delivery does not interfere with data transmission.

Power Management

The switch continuously monitors the total power budget. If the connected devices exceed the available power, the switch may deny power to some ports or reduce power allocation to maintain stability. This ensures protection for both the switch and the connected devices.

Summary

In essence, a PoE switch relies on its internal power supply to provide DC power, detects and classifies connected devices, and delivers regulated power over Ethernet cables according to the PoE standard and mode. Proper sizing of the switch's power supply is critical to ensure all connected devices receive sufficient power without overloading the system.
