Fiber Optic Cable and Power Cord Fabrication

Fiber optic cables are made from ultra-pure silica and precision-engineered layers, while power cords are fabricated from conductive metals and insulating materials to safely transmit electricity.

Fiber Optic Cable Fabrication

Materials and Preform Creation: Fiber optic cables begin with ultra-pure silica (silicon dioxide), which is refined into cylindrical glass rods called preforms. These preforms are created by depositing silica particles inside a hollow tube or onto a solid rod using high-temperature chemical vapor deposition methods, often involving gases like SiCl₄, GeCl₄, and POCl₃ to form the fiber core. Fiber Drawing: The preform is heated above 2,000°C and drawn into thin fibers with a precise diameter of 125 microns, maintaining tolerances of ±1 micron.

Coating and Buffering: The drawn fibers are coated with protective layers to prevent physical damage and signal loss. This includes a primary coating, buffer layers, and sometimes additional strength members like aramid yarns for tensile support. Cable Assembly: Multiple fibers are stranded together, often with fillers and subunits, and encased in an outer jacket made of durable polymers to protect against environmental factors.

The final cable is tested for attenuation, tensile strength, and durability, ensuring long-term performance. Applications: Fiber optic cables are used in telecommunications, high-speed internet, medical equipment, automotive lighting, and industrial robotics due to their high bandwidth, low latency, and immunity to electromagnetic interference.

Power Cord Fabrication

Conductor Material: Power cords use copper or aluminum wires for electrical conductivity. The wires are often stranded to improve flexibility and reduce breakage. Insulation: Conductors are coated with insulating materials such as PVC, rubber, or thermoplastic elastomers to prevent electrical leakage and protect users from shocks.

Sheathing and Reinforcement: Multiple insulated conductors are bundled and covered with an outer jacket for mechanical protection. Some cords include additional layers like braided shields for electromagnetic interference protection or aramid fibers for tensile strength. Assembly and Testing: Power cords are cut to length, terminated with plugs or connectors, and tested for continuity, insulation resistance, and voltage withstand to ensure safety and compliance with standards like UL or IEC.

Applications: Power cords are used in household appliances, industrial machinery, medical devices, and electronic equipment, providing safe and reliable electrical power transmission.
