Composite Cable Tray Cabling Specifications

Composite cable trays, particularly FRP types, require careful consideration of tray dimensions, support spacing, load capacity, fill ratios, and environmental protection to ensure safe and durable installation.

Tray Selection and Fill Ratio

When selecting a composite cable tray, the width, height, and allowable fill ratio must match the total cable area to be supported. The fill ratio should not exceed recommended values to allow for heat dissipation, maintenance, and future expansion. For example, if a cable bundle occupies 6000 mm² and the design fill ratio is 50%, the tray's internal area should be at least 12,000 mm².

Smaller cable diameters can allow slightly higher fill ratios, but always verify against local electrical codes and project specifications.

Support Spacing and Load Capacity

Support spacing is critical for structural integrity.

For FR

P ladder trays, maximum support spacing typically ranges from 3. 6 m, with a maximum load per hanger between 318 kg (700 lbs) and 340 kg (750 lbs). Center-hung supports facilitate easier cable installation by allowing cables to be deposited from both sides.

Rung spacing for ladder-type trays is generally 150–230 mm (6–9 inches) to maintain cable positioning and prevent sagging.

Environmental and Safety Considerations

Composite trays are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic, and electrically insulating, making them ideal for harsh environments such as chemical plants, wastewater facilities, and coastal installations. Outdoor installations may require UV protection or covers to prevent degradation. Ensure that trays are installed according to local building codes, electrical codes, and safety standards, and that qualified personnel follow proper handling, grounding, and maintenance procedures.

Installation Best PracticesPre-plan tray layout considering building design, equipment locations, and clearances. Use appropriate fittings such as bends, tees, and reducers to maintain cable integrity. Avoid overloading trays beyond their rated capacity.

Maintain minimum bend radius for cables exiting the tray to prevent damage. Secure trays properly to prevent movement and vibration, especially in high-traffic or seismic areas. By adhering to these parameters, composite cable tray systems can provide long-term reliability, safety, and ease of maintenance in industrial and commercial installations.
