ONU optical port connected to switch

The ONU optical port connects to the fiber network via the PON port, while its LAN ports can be connected to a switch to distribute network access to multiple devices.

Understanding the ONU and Its Ports

An ON

U (Optical Network Unit) is a terminal device in a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) or fiber-to-the-office (FTTO) network that converts optical signals from the service provider into electrical signals usable by local devices.

The ON

U typically has: PON port: Connects to the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) through the Optical Distribution Network (ODN), receiving downstream data and sending upstream signals.

LA

N ports: Ethernet interfaces (10/100/1000 Mbps) used to connect user devices or network equipment like switches. Optional ports: Telephone (POTS), USB, or CATV for additional services. Connecting to a SwitchTo expand network access for multiple devices in an office or home: Connect the ONU's LAN port to the switch using a standard Ethernet cable.

This allows the switch to distribute the network to multiple devices within the LAN. Switch role: The switch operates at Layer 2, forwarding data between connected devices based on MAC addresses. It does not perform routing but enables multiple devices to share the same network provided by the ONU.

Router integration (optional): If internet access or IP routing is required, a router can be connected to the switch or directly to the ONU, depending on the network design.

Network Flow Overview

Downstream: Data from the OLT travels through the fiber to the ONU's PON port, then is converted to electrical signals and sent to the switch via the LAN port. Upstream: Data from devices connected to the switch is aggregated and sent back through the ONU to the OLT. This setup supports multiple services such as internet, VoIP, IPTV, and enterprise LAN connectivity.

Practical Tips

Ensure the ONU and switch support compatible speeds (e.g., gigabit Ethernet) for optimal performance. Use quality Ethernet cables (Cat5e or higher) to connect the ONU to the switch. For enterprise setups, VLANs can be configured on the switch to segment traffic from different ONU LAN ports.

By connecting the ONU's LAN port to a switch, multiple devices can efficiently share the fiber network connection while maintaining high-speed, stable connectivity.
