Corrosion Fiber Optics and Cables

Fiber optic cables themselves do not corrode like metals, but they can suffer from stress corrosion, chemical attack, and metal armor corrosion under harsh environmental conditions.

Glass Core and Stress Corrosion

The core of a fiber optic cable is made of ultra-pure glass (silicon dioxide) or specialized plastic, which does not chemically corrode like copper or other metals. However, fiber optic cables are susceptible to stress corrosion, where small micro-cracks in the glass can grow over time due to tension, temperature fluctuations, or water ingress. This can eventually degrade performance, increase attenuation, and potentially lead to breakage.

Water and Environmental Effects

While the glass itself is resistant to water, water can damage the cable assembly. In loose-tube or poorly sealed cables, water can freeze and expand, cracking buffer tubes and misaligning the core. In submarine or coastal installations, saltwater can corrode metal armor and protective layers, eventually compromising the cable.

Water ingress can also create micro-bubbles in the core, scattering light and increasing insertion loss, which reduces network performance.

Chemical and Industrial Exposure

Fiber optic cables in industrial or agricultural areas may face chemical corrosion. Acids, solvents, oils, fertilizers, and pesticides can degrade the cable jacket, etch the glass core, or corrode metal strength members. Soil contaminants like heavy metals can also accelerate jacket cracking and reduce cable lifespan.

Metal Armor Corrosion

Cables with steel or metallic armor are vulnerable to oxidation and rust if protective coatings fail. High-density polyethylene (PE) jackets, stainless steel armor, or anti-corrosion coatings are used to prevent this. In highly corrosive environments, stainless steel grades 304 or 316 are preferred for long-term durability.

Mitigation Strategies

Use gel-filled or water-blocking cables to prevent water migration. Employ chemical-resistant jackets and stainless steel armor in corrosive environments. Ensure proper installation to minimize stress and bending, reducing the risk of stress corrosion.

Regular inspections and maintenance can detect early signs of degradation before network performance is affected. In summary, while the glass core of fiber optic cables does not corrode, the cable can experience stress corrosion, chemical degradation, and metal armor corrosion, all of which can impact performance and longevity if not properly mitigated.
