How to move fiber optic cables

Fiber optic cables must be moved carefully using proper rollers, tension control, and drum handling techniques to prevent damage and maintain performance.

Planning and Preparation

Before moving fiber optic cables, assess the route for obstacles, sharp turns, or tight spaces. Ensure the work area is clear and safe, and gather all necessary equipment, including rollers, forklifts, or cranes depending on the cable size and weight. Proper planning reduces the risk of bending, kinking, or crushing the cable.

Using Rollers

Corner Rollers: Use rollers with a radius no smaller than the cable's minimum bending radius to prevent fiber breakage. Grooved Rollers: When pulling multiple cables together, use separate grooved rollers for each cable to avoid tangling and abrasion. Tension Control: Continuously monitor pulling tension and never exceed the manufacturer's maximum tension to prevent internal fiber damage.

Handling Cable Drums

Upright Position: Always move drums in an upright position; tilting slightly is acceptable to keep the drum stable on the forklift. Forklift Use: Ensure the forklift forks are longer than the drum width and raise the drum at least 6–8 inches from the ground. Do not release the drum until the vehicle has stopped completely.

Rolling Direction: Roll the drum in the direction indicated on the drum to prevent loosening or kinking of the cable. Cranes for Heavy Drums: For large or heavy drums, use a shaft through the drum center and a spreader bar to avoid compressing the drum flanges.

Transportation and Storage

Avoid Horizontal Storage: Do not lay drums flat during transport, as this can crush lower layers of the cable. Spacing: Maintain sufficient space between drums to prevent damage from forklift contact. Securing Drums: Use stoppers or restraints to prevent rolling during storage or transport.

By following these methods—proper planning, roller use, tension control, and careful drum handling—fiber optic cables can be moved safely without compromising their performance or longevity.
