Applications of MEMS fiber optic pressure sensors

MEMS fiber optic pressure sensors use Fabry–Perot interferometry to convert pressure changes into optical signals, offering high accuracy, small size, and resistance to harsh environments. Working PrincipleMEMS fiber optic pressure sensors typically operate based on Fabry–Perot (FP) interference. A sensitive diaphragm forms one surface of the FP cavity, while the fiber end face forms the other.

External pressure deforms the diaphragm, changing the cavity length, which alters the interference pattern of light reflected within the cavity. This optical signal is then measured to determine the applied pressure with high precision.

The MEM

S fabrication allows integration of micro-scale mechanical structures directly onto optical fibers, enabling compact and highly sensitive designs.

Advantages

High accuracy and linearity: MEMS FP sensors provide precise pressure measurements with minimal nonlinearity, often below 0. 5%. Small size and flexibility: Sensors can be as small as 0.

2 mm in diameter, suitable for medical endoscopy, aerospace, and industrial monitoring. Harsh environment tolerance: Fiber optic sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, resistant to corrosion, and capable of operating at high temperatures, with some designs functioning up to 1200 °C using sapphire diaphragms. Low temperature cross-sensitivity: Integration with fiber Bragg gratings allows temperature compensation, improving measurement reliability in varying thermal conditions.

ApplicationsMEMS fiber optic pressure sensors are used in diverse fields: Industrial and structural monitoring: Oil & gas, civil engineering, and aerospace applications. Medical devices: Miniature sensors for endoscopy and other minimally invasive procedures. High-temperature environments: Sapphire-based sensors for aerospace and energy sectors.

Research and laboratory use: High-fidelity pressure measurements in electromagnetic or RF-rich environments.

Recent Developments

Recent advances include: Two-photon polymerization 3D printing for complex microstructures. All fused-silica sensors to eliminate thermal expansion mismatch and extend high-temperature capability to ~530 °C. Batch fabrication techniques using laser fusion and anodic bonding for cost-effective, uniform production.

Integration with signal conditioning technologies to enhance long-term accuracy, repeatability, and low drift in harsh environments.

Commercial Products

An example is the OPP-M sensor by Opsens Solutions, a MEMS-based fiber optic pressure sensor with high-frequency response, miniature size, and resistance to magnetic resonance and electromagnetic interference. It can be customized for OEM applications and integrated into host systems for industrial monitoring.

MEM

S fiber optic pressure sensors continue to evolve, with ongoing research focusing on new materials for extreme conditions, further miniaturization, and improved temperature compensation, making them increasingly versatile for industrial, medical, and aerospace applications.
