Fiber Optic Cable Identification Tester

Fiber optic cable identification instruments detect active fibers, determine signal direction, and allow non-destructive testing without interrupting network traffic.

Overview

Fiber optic cable identification instruments, also known as optical fiber identifiers (OFIs) or fiber signal tracers, are essential tools for technicians working with fiber optic networks. They allow the detection of live signals, identification of signal direction, and verification of fiber connectivity without disconnecting or cutting the fiber, preventing service interruptions during installation, maintenance, or troubleshooting.

How They Work

These instruments typically clamp onto the fiber and induce a safe macro-bend, allowing a small amount of light to escape. The device then detects this light to determine the presence of network traffic, test tones, or continuous wave (CW) signals. Many models also indicate the direction of the signal, which is crucial for tracing fiber routes and verifying polarity.

Some advanced units include a built-in visual fault locator (VFL) to quickly pinpoint breaks, bends, or faulty connectors. Key FeaturesNon-destructive testing: Clamping the device on the fiber does not disrupt signal traffic. Signal detection: Identifies active fibers and measures signal presence across a range of wavelengths (typically 850–1625 nm),.

Signal direction: Indicates the direction of light propagation for accurate fiber tracing. Compatibility: Works with single-mode (SM) and multi-mode (MM) fibers, including bend-insensitive fibers. Portability: Handheld and rugged designs suitable for field use.

Additional functions: Some instruments combine optical power measurement, continuity testing, and connector inspection in one device.

Applications

Fiber optic identifiers are widely used in: Telecommunications networks for installation and maintenance. Data centers and enterprise networks to verify fiber routing and connectivity. Troubleshooting and preventive maintenance to locate faults, verify polarity, and ensure proper signal flow.

Examples of Instruments

Fluke Networks FINDFIBE

R: Works with SimpliFiber Pro power meters for fast fiber identification and polarity verification.

AF

L OFI-BI and OFI-BIPM: Highly sensitive units for detecting single-mode fibers, including bend-insensitive types.

GA

O Tek Fiber Identifiers: Detect SM/MM fibers, identify signal direction, and include a built-in VFL for fault location. FiberLert-125 6P: Non-contact live fiber detector for fast verification of active signals and connectivity. These instruments save time, reduce the risk of service disruption, and enhance the accuracy of fiber network maintenance and troubleshooting.
