Fiber Optic Displacement Sensor

Fiber optic displacement sensors measure the position or movement of a target by detecting changes in light transmitted through optical fibers, offering high sensitivity, non-contact measurement, and suitability for harsh environments.

Working Principle

Fiber optic displacement sensors operate by transmitting light through an optical fiber to a target and measuring the reflected or transmitted light intensity. The displacement of the target alters the amount of light received by the sensor, which is then converted into an electrical signal proportional to the distance or movement of the target. Common techniques include intensity modulation, where changes in light intensity indicate displacement, and interferometry, which provides high precision but is more complex.

Sensor Configurations

Random fiber distribution: High sensitivity over a short range due to close interaction between fibers. Hemispherical fiber distribution: Long-range measurement with lower sensitivity. Concentric fiber arrangement: Intermediate sensitivity and range, less affected by target tilt.

Edge or shadow probes: Measure thin targets or edges by detecting light shadowing between fiber bundles. AdvantagesNon-contact measurement: Reduces wear and avoids mechanical interference. High sensitivity and resolution: Capable of detecting minute displacements.

Harsh environment compatibility: Resistant to electromagnetic interference, high temperatures, and vibration. Compact and flexible design: Small probe size allows integration in tight spaces.

Applications

Fiber optic displacement sensors are widely used in: Industrial monitoring: Measuring vibrations, surface conditions, and machine alignment. Civil engineering: Structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, and concrete structures. Aerospace and aviation: In-flight and on-ground structural monitoring.

Precision engineering: Micro-assembly, reverse engineering, and quality control. Liquid level and refractive index measurement: Using reflective or through-beam techniques.

Performance Considerations

Stroke length: Typically available in ranges like 10 mm or 25 mm for linear displacement. Probe type and fiber arrangement: Determines sensitivity and measurement range. Target reflectivity: Can affect the sensor output, but calibration ensures consistent performance.

Environmental resistance: Fiber optic sensors can operate in vacuum, high pressure, or cryogenic conditions with appropriate design. Fiber optic displacement sensors combine precision, durability, and versatility, making them ideal for applications where conventional sensors may fail due to environmental or mechanical constraints.
