Fiber optic cable enters the junction box

Once a fiber optic cable enters the junction or termination box, it is secured, spliced to pigtails, and connected to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) to deliver service to the home or business.

Securing and Organizing the Cable

When the fiber optic cable enters the junction box, also called a fiber termination box, it is first anchored and fixed to prevent any pulling or stress that could damage the delicate fibers inside. The box provides a protected environment that shields the fiber from dust, moisture, and physical impacts, ensuring long-term reliability. Inside the box, splice trays or cassettes are used to neatly organize the fiber and any excess length, which helps maintain signal integrity and simplifies future maintenance.

Splicing to Pigtails

The next step involves splicing the incoming fiber to pigtails, which are short fiber cables with connectors on one end. This can be done using fusion splicing, which permanently joins the fibers, or mechanical splicing, which aligns them precisely without melting. The pigtails then serve as the interface between the main fiber line and the customer's equipment, allowing for a stable, high-quality connection.

Connection to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT)After splicing, the fiber is routed from the junction box to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which may be installed inside or just outside the building.

The ON

T converts the light signals from the fiber into electrical signals that can be used by routers or gateways to provide internet, video, and voice services.

The ON

T is typically connected to a Wi-Fi gateway or router via an Ethernet cable, enabling network distribution throughout the home or office.

Additional Functions

The junction box also acts as a demarcation point between the service provider's network and the customer's internal wiring, allowing technicians to troubleshoot or upgrade the network without entering the building. Any extra fiber can be stored in the box, and the box may include multiple ports for branching connections to different devices or units in multi-dwelling setups. In summary, after the fiber optic cable enters the junction box, it is secured, spliced to pigtails, organized within trays, and connected to the ONT, which then interfaces with the home or business network to deliver high-speed fiber services.
