Composition and Structure Diagram of Fiber Optic Sensor

A fiber optic sensor system typically consists of a light source, optical fiber, sensing element (transducer), optical detector, and signal processing unit. Key Components1. Light Source: The system begins with a light source such as a laser diode, LED, or superluminescent diode, which generates the optical signal that travels through the fiber.

The light source provides the energy needed for sensing and can be modulated in intensity, wavelength, or phase depending on the sensor type. 2. Optical Fiber: The optical fiber acts as the transmission medium, carrying light from the source to the sensing element and back to the detector.

In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself is affected by the measurand, while in extrinsic sensors, the fiber simply transmits light to and from an external transducer. 3. Sensing Element (Transducer): The transducer converts the physical quantity (e.g., temperature, pressure, strain) into a modulation of the light signal.

This can involve changes in intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength. In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself is the sensing element, whereas in extrinsic sensors, the transducer is external. 4.

Optical Detector: The detector receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal. Common detectors include photodiodes or photodetectors, which measure changes in light intensity, phase, or wavelength caused by the sensing element. 5.

Signal Processing Unit: The electronic processing unit analyzes the electrical signal from the detector. This may include wave analyzers, optical spectrum analyzers, or oscilloscopes to interpret the changes in the optical signal and provide meaningful measurements.

Optional Components

Fiber Amplifier Unit: In industrial fiber sensors, an amplifier may be used to enhance signal strength and provide control logic for sensor heads. Multiplexing Devices: For distributed sensing, multiple sensors can be connected along a single fiber using wavelength division multiplexing or time-domain reflectometry.

Diagram Overview

A simplified component diagram can be visualized as: Light Source → Optical Fiber → Sensing Element (Transducer) → Optical Fiber → Detector → Signal Processing UnitIn intrinsic sensors, the sensing occurs within the fiber itself. In extrinsic sensors, the fiber transmits light to an external transducer, which modulates the light before it returns to the detector. Hybrid sensors combine both approaches, with light interacting with both the fiber and an external transducer.

This structure allows fiber optic sensors to operate in harsh environments, resist electromagnetic interference, and provide non-contact, high-precision measurements.
